I was just talking to random people about pairing names. told me about how she always gets a twitch when she sees M/L or Michael/Lincoln because she's used to the anime fandom where you always put the character who is topping first. So Michael/Lincoln gives her a fundamentally different mental image than Lincoln/Michael.
It really started when
clex_monkie89 Which made me think:
I say M/L rather than L/M because when I read over it my brain thinks that EmEl is more fluent than ElEm.
When I type them out I think brain calls them MichaelLinc or MichaelandLinc rather than using Lincoln.
Ironically Lincoln/Veronica are LincolnandVeronica. Sucre/Maricruz are for unknown reasons Sucre 'n Maricruz. Michael/Sara are always MichaelandSara and never MichaelSara. T-Bag/Abruzzi on the other hand are T-BagAbruzzi, same goes for MichaelSucre or MichaelKellerman, but for some reason it is KellermanAndHale. T-Bag/Maytag my mind always wants to write them with an ampersand, T-Bag&Maytag and like draw a heart around their names and paint some flowers or something.
It's kind of amusing with the pairing names, if you just had MS if could mean Michael Scofield, Michael/Sara, Michael/Scure or Maricruz/Sucre. So to tell them apart one would technically have to go with MiSa, MiSu, MaSu. *eeek*
I thought about it and I think other than "whatever sounds nicer to me", I was mostly shaped by my very first fandom, The X-Files. Where I think the fandom had a tendency to rank the pairings according to which character was more important on the show. So it was Mulder/Krycek, M/K, even though they often had a tendency to switch and it was Mulder/Skinner, M/Sk, even though Skinner was usually topping. The same way it was Scully/Skinner, Scully/Dogget, Scully/Krycek (Scully more important character than any of them), or Skinner/Krycek (Skinner bigger/more important character than Krycek), Krycek/Pendrell (hey, Krycek gets to go first for once).
It's rather interesting therefore that in while it is Buffy&Angel, Buffy&Spike, Buffy&Giles or Buffy&Xander, it is Logan&Veronica (from Veronica Mars), L/V, but VD).
It's also interesting that there always seem to be trends particular to one fandom. Like all of Roswell was dominated by weird nickname pairings (Dreamers, Stargazers, Catfighters). And all of Smallville was ruled by smushed pairing names (Clex, Clana, Mionel, Chlana, Chlex, Plana).
Note: You can always vote for more than one option.
