CHARACTER
• name • Esther Blanchett
• series • Trinity Blood
• personality •  Esther at first appears to be a kind, confident, though rather outspoken young woman. Having been raised as a nun she harbors a tremendous amount of compassion and cares greatly for others. But despite the discipline she was taught from an early age, she doesn't have a lot of control over her emotions.

Though Esther is both intelligent and practical, she is also stubborn and will often let her emotions rule her -- especially when it comes to her own personal beliefs and convictions. She acted as a terrorist for years, believing that all Methuselah were the same and essentially evil.

Esther's hatred for all Methuselah ends after her encounter with Count Gyula. Left with more questions than answers, she chooses to embark on a journey to Rome with Abel and Tres to figure things out for herself. She is always searching for reasons behind the tragedies that have occurred around her -- why Bishop Laura had to die, why Count Gyula had to die, why Dietrich betrayed her.

Esther has never forgiven herself for the crimes she committed against the Methuselah, but she also doesn't let that sorrow rule over her. She remains idealistic and trusting through all her hardships, something that her more jaded comrades find refreshing about her.

• history • Esther Blanchett was raised in Istvan by a nun named Bishop Laura Vitez. She saw Bishop Laura as a mother figure and for the most part followed her teachings.

At age seventeen she meets Father Abel Nightroad. Esther first runs into him while dressed as a boy, smuggling drugs with her friend Dietrich. To her embarrassment/horror she later finds out that he is the priest her church was expecting, and asks him not to tell Bishop Laura of their earlier encounter.

It soon becomes apparent that both Esther and Dietrich were smuggling dangerous chemicals, and are involved in acts of terrorism against the Methuselah.

Later that night, not long after Esther showed Abel to his room, the chapel is attacked by a vampire. Several are killed. When Abel arrives (or rather, falls through a ceiling...) at the scene Esther tells him to run before passing out.

The next day Esther is praying at the graves of those who were killed during the attack. She tells Bishop Laura of her plans to attack Gyula so that no one else will have to suffer, and so that the church will be safe again. Bishop Laura tells Esther to come back safely.

But right as Esther, Dietrich and Abel are leaving for Gyula's castle, bombs go off in a massive explosion. Bishop Laura is killed and Esther is completely devastated. Abel comforts her, telling Esther that she is not alone -- that he is her partner.

Esther, Abel and Dietrich storm Gyula's castle. Esther jumps right in, trying to attack Gyula and making no effort to hide her rage. However she is caught slightly off guard as he retells the story of his beloved wife and how she was burned at the stake for simply loving a Methuselah.

But nothing could have prepared her for Dietrich's betrayal. She is stunned as he casually refers to Gyula as "your excellency" and tells her everything was a lie. Dietrich used Esther to shoot Abel, and leaves her to activate the 'Star of Sorrow' -- which is set to obliterate Rome. With her new friend bleeding on the floor, Dietrich out of sight, and her enemy gloating, Esther almost gives up. Abel picks himself up, though, and shoots at Gyula, snapping Esther out of it. She then chases after Dietrich, still not wanting to believe that he could be that evil.

When she finds him he offers the code freely. Thinking he was sincere Esther quickly rushes back to Abel in time to see that he overcame Gyula. She enters the code only to find that Dietrich had lied once more...it changed the target from Rome to Istvan.

Abel overrides that code easily enough and the Star of Sorrow disappears. Just when things finally seem to be over, Gyula's men enter, guns blazing. At the same time Tres enters as well -- but just a bit too late.

A bullet was headed right for Esther, and Gyula threw himself in front of her to protect her. This is a major turning point for her -- Esther's world has been turned upside down. Her mother figure died, her best friend betrayed her, and she is starting to realize that her beliefs about Methuselah might have been wrong. So when Tres and Abel are headed back to Rome Esther asks to get transferred and travels with them.

Along the way she learns a little bit more about Abel and the world in general, but it isn't until she arrives at the Vatican and becomes a full-fledged AX agent that her adventure starts up again.

Ion Fortuna, Count of Memphis and Imperial messenger from the New Human Empire becomes an important person to Esther. Things immediately start out badly when the building Caterina Sforza was staying in catches fire during his first appearance. Ion is immediately a suspect and Abel and Esther are sent to find him and Ion's partner, Radu Barvon. After things calm down and the four talk things out it becomes apparent that there is some sort of ulterior motive behind the fire.

Radu confirms this when he tries to kill Ion and blame it on the Vatican. The Inquisition Squad and City Police all become involved, and Abel is forced to use the Crusnik in front of Esther which terrifies her. Radu activates a deadly sandstorm that would wipe out an entire city and Methuselah and those from the Vatican work together to put an end to it.

Esther gets a grip on herself and overcomes her fear of Abel. She joins him to deactivate the sandstorm. Radu dies and Ion is left heartbroken. After this ordeal Esther is left with a better understanding of Methuselah and fully believes that they aren't 'monsters'. Ion becomes a treasured friend to her.

Esther, Abel and Ion do travel to The New Human Empire where Ion is mistaken for a murderer and the three get caught up in a plot to assassinate the Empress. The Empress is revealed to be Seth, Abel's younger sister. The ordeal brings Ion closer to Esther, and Esther closer to Abel.

After returning to Istvan from the Empire Esther is thoroughly surprised to learn that she has been given the title "Lady Saint". People are praising her and looking up to her for killing a Methuselah, and this leaves her with a rather sick feeling.

During Esther's first speech as Lady Saint, Esther is kidnapped by a Methuselah named Shahrazad al-Rahman. When Esther wakes up Shahra tells Esther that she was blackmailed into doing so by the archbishop, and that if Shahra did not kill Esther, the archbishop woul kill Esther's friends.

Esther is labeled a traitor to the Vatican as she tries her best to reveal the archbishop's plans and save Shahra's friends. She forms a close friendship with Shahra, and during the final battle is even willing to run away with Shahra and bear the title of traitor for life. Instead Shahra forces Esther to kill her so that she can remain the Lady Saint and help more people in the long run.

This causes Esther an almost unbearable amount of grief. She vows to not use the title lightly, and to do her best to honor Shahra's memory.
