'Troy', 'Starsky & Hutch'

It was movie day yesterday. Finally saw 'Troy' and got 'Starsky & Hutch' in the mail from Netflix.

'Troy' mini-review -
Too long, too slow, not enough Sean Bean, Brad was mis-cast... and Paris must die!

I'm too lazy for a detailed review, so here are my observations in no particular order:
1. 'Troy' was in desparate need of an EDITOR! The battles/fights were cool, but I nearly fell asleep inbetween them with the ponderous pacing and lame dialogue.
2. Not enough Sean Bean!
3. Brad Pitt wasn't as bad as I feared as Achilles, but he was still miscast. Too many eye-rolling moments of dialogue and all-too-obvious posing for the camera, and I just couldn't accept him as an invincible warrior. Eric Bana would have been a better choice.
4. Why the hell didn't Hector toss Paris and Helen overboard at the beginning and spare me watching the spoiled brat for the rest of the movie...!? I could not stand Paris, and there was zero chemistry between him and Helen. Orlando, my opinion of you as an actor (which wasn't high to begin with) is sinking fast.
5. Peter O'Toole looked *really* old.
6. Couldn't they have found a better Helen? She was hardly the woman who's face "lauched a thousand ships"... maybe picking someone who could act would be a nice idea.
7. Not enough Sean Bean!
8. Lots of nice beefcake though, with all those big sweaty men in short skirts. lol. Brad Pitt did look pretty buff, but that wasn't enough to make up for the rest of the movie.
9. Eric Bana was the best in the movie, IMHO. He made the whole thing semi-watchable.
10. Not enough Sean Bean!

Rating: 2 1/2 stars (out of 4)

'Starsky & Hutch'-
cheesy ripoff of one of my favorite 70's TV shows.

I only rented it because I used to love the old TV show with David Soul and Paul-Michael Glaser. Yea, looking back on it, and seeing the reruns, I realize it was pretty lame, but it was fun at the time.
But I've decided I just do *not* get the humor of the current generation of comedians like Ben Stiller, Will Farrell and Owen Wilson (who were all in this movie). Lame, lame and not funny. I watched the first 45 minutes then fast-forwarded through the rest. Didn't miss much and saved myself a wasted hour of my life.

Good stuff --
* The red Ford Torino! It's still a cool car! I loved the deliberate car stunts with it.
* The only amusing part of it was them making fun of the slashiness of the old show. I had friends back then who were really into S/H fanfic -- gave me a good giggle.
* The cameo of David Soul and Paul-Michael Glaser at the end was so cool!!! But, my god, David Soul looked terrible. Not exactly the pretty boy anymore. I wonder if he's been sick? Glaser (who was my favorite) still looked pretty hot though.

I can only recommend this movie if you were a big fan of the old show, and even then its not very watchable.

Rating: 2 stars

Next movie on my list -- 'Farenheit 9/11'. I'm taking mom (and maybe my aunt and cousin too) to see it later today.
