I’m still gutted from last night’s series finale of Starz’ “Spartacus”…
*wibbles*
Spoilers coming, of course (although if you’ve studied Roman history at all, you already know how it ends).
When I started watching it, it was just a guilty pleasure, because “Spartacus” has always featured extremely graphic violence as well as graphic sex -- since it was on pay-cable, it was more like soft-core porn. And it was one of the few shows I've ever seen that regularly had *male* full-frontal nudity. It was ancient Rome, after all, done in the style of the movie “300”. But the show got better and better, and I got hooked on the story and characters.
And of course I’ve always been fascinated with ancient Rome - “Gladiator” is in my list of top 5 movies of all time - so it didn’t take long before it became one of my favorite shows.
It even managed to not only survive, but flourish in the wake of losing its leading actor, namely Andy Whitfield who died MUCH too soon from lymphoma after the first season. Liam McIntyre did an amazing job after, and he was brilliant in the finale
The Finale was beautifully done though, and the closing credits - showing all the characters from throughout the shows run - were heart-breaking.
It's no surprise that just about everyone dies, in gruesome, bloody ways. After all, history tells us that the Romans ultimate crushed Spartacus' slave rebellion and crucified his followers by the thousands along the Appian Way leading to Rome, as a warning to other slaves who might be considering rebelling against their masters.
Spartacus: died of his wounds (according to history, his body was never found)
Crixus: beheaded.
Gannicus, Kore: crucified
Naevia, Sexa, Duro: died in battle
Tiberius: killed by Kore (YAY!)
Crassus, Caesar, Sibyl, Laeta, : survived
Agron & Nasir: LIVED! and walked away at the very end with some orphaned children... a GAY COUPLE walked off into the sunset with plans to live free somewhere and have their own goat farm together.... how COOL is that...!?
Actually, more people survived than I thought would live. I thought they'd all be crucified, like in the old Kirk Douglas 'Spartacus' movie.
And I loved it that they managed to include the 'I AM SPARTACUS' line from various characters, a homage to the original movie.
But I was very satisfied overall... and very sad too!
So R.I.P. , Spartacus.
- There is no greater victory than to fall from this world a free man... (Spartacus)
