OMG, has it been *that* long since I posted here...!?

'The Hobbit' (part one) opens next week!  YAY!

I've been having a bit of a Tolkien-inspired geek-gasm in the past few days, and the movie hasn't even opened yet.  *g*

I'd read all the books ages ago, and had very much been a Tolkien nerd when I was in my teens/twenties.

Over the years, though, that ( Read more... )

I'd been avoiding 'Hobbit'-related news and fannish stuff for a long time, simply because I wanted to watch it with as few preconceived ideas as possible. I wasn't even gonna re-read the book until after the film came out.

My willpower held out until about a month ago, and I started re-reading the book. I was wondering how the hell PJ was going to make 3 movies out of the relatively small book. Then I read that they're going to fill in the gaps that Tolkien didn't include in the actual book - but is in the LOTR Appendices and Unfinished Tales - like what Gandalf was up to when he wasn't with Bilbo and the dwarves.... awesome!

A few weeks ago, I re-watched the trailers.... and of all things, it was hearing Thorin *singing* ( "... far over the Misty Moutains cold... to dungeons deep and caverns old..." ) that sent a shiver down my spine.

My first thought was: "Holy shit.... *THAT'S* Thorin Oakenshield...!? .... *Guh*!"

Back in the 70's, there was a children's cartoon version of 'The Hobbit' where all the dwarves, including Thorin, were all old and grey and wrinkled and not at all handsome and certainly *not* sexy! So from then on, that was the way I thought of the dwarves in 'The Hobbit'.

Until now, lol.

It's kinda like my opinion of book!Boromir (who I wasn't interested in very much) vs. movie!Boromir (who became my favorite character in the films!) -- all thanks to Sean Bean!

I don't know much of anything about the other new actors, except for Sylvester McCoy (the 7th Doctor Who) playing Radagast, and James Nesbitt (who played the lead in the wonderful miniseries 'Jekyll') playing Bofur.
