Xbox, Playstation, consoles, accessories etc

I want to get Quatlet a games console for Christmas - though I've often thought I'd get a family one once he was old enough, so plan to use it too! Second hand is fine.
The only thing he wants for Christmas is Lego Dimensions, so makes sense to get a PS3 or 4, or a Xbox 360 or One, to play it. Fluxlet has a WiiU so figure there's no point duplicating that. Neighbour has a Xbox360 and Quatlet already has the Xbox360 version of Skylanders (goodness knows if he can find any of the bits to go with the game...)

So browsing Ebay etc and hugely confused. Last time I played any console was the original Playstation in 1992...

Can 360 games be played on the Xbox One?
What size hard drive do I need?
What controllers and other accessories do I need - assume I want 2 basic controllers but what is a Kinect? Seems to come with some but look the same?
I know the 360 is discontinued and new games may not be playable on it, but given Quatlet's pocket money is more likely to mean games from CEX, that's less of an issue.
Recommendations for family quiz or racing or other games also appreciated! I won't be getting any games rated 12 or over for Quatlet, but so far he agrees from trailers that all such games look 'too scary'! MrK and I like games where timing and fine motor control aren't really required (hence sticking to PCs up to now).

Basically what's the difference between consoles listed for £30 vs £150? And what do I need to know to make sure Quatlet can't sneakily start chatting over the internet on it? Anyone thinking about selling their old console, let me know.
