Genius gone too soon, dammit!
Dave Stevens is dead? It just leaves a big raw pit in my stomach to even type this.
I love Dave Stevens. The man's artwork and storytelling were nearly unmatchable. He made you fall in love with a world of rocket packs, gyrocopters, stunt pilots, mysterymen, and beautiful dames. I learned how to appreciate the masters he was inspired by, particularly Frank Frazetta and Russ Manning.
I still will argue till I am blue that Dave was the main reason for the resurgent popularity in the last few decades of 50's pinup queen/stag film star/fertility goddess, Bettie Page (and probably Rondo Hatton as well). I will also continue to assert that though 'The Rocketeer' was set in the 30's, there is no doubt it greatly influenced the style of "Steampunk" as we know it today.
