More Kitchen Fun

Conrad could not help but feel highly amused when Yuuri took out his Home Economics uniform and, with a fwip, donned them swiftly over his gakuran.

“I must say, Your Majesty,” he said casually, tying his own apron (which no doubt had been brought along upon the insisting of Jennifer). “You sure are enthusiastic about making these rice balls.”

Yuuri grinned sheepishly as he bustled about the clean, quaint kitchen. He had begged the maids all morning to vacate it. They seemed a bit scandalized at the thought of the Maou preparing everyone's lunch but Yuuri had his way in the end.

“I've gotta be,” he began. “It's the only food I know how to make well. Besides, no one here has had them before so it's high time I bring the taste of Japanese food to this world!” he said determinedly. “...or put my skills to good use.” was added as an afterthought.

Yuuri rummaged through the large gym bag of ingredients he bought from Earth. An entire rice cooker, filled to the brim with cooked rice found itself sitting (somewhat out of place) on the large wooden work table. A pack of un-cut nori sheets, pickles, canned tuna, Japanese mayonnaise, a kind of lettuce and various other ingredients soon joined it.

Conrad too, went around, preparing various kitchen stuffs and a few home-grown herbs to add. “Alright,” he said. “But why ask my help?”

Yuuri threw him a look over his shoulder. “Do you have to ask, Conrad? After having Wolfram nearly killed the jello I made last time, I'm not taking any chances!”

Conrad laughed at that and somewhere within Blood Pledge Castle, Wolfram sneezed.

“Yes sir,” the Maou's guardian said in a good-natured, mock-salute. “What would you like me to do?” he asked as Yuuri finally returned to the work table, satisfied with everything prepared.

The black-haired boy considered the question for a moment before saying, “Okay, I'll get started with the filling and you ball up the rice.”

Yuuri explained as he worked, wetting his hands before taking a scoop of rice from the cooker, shaping it into a neat triangle and pressing a hole just so for the filling. “We can wrap them with nori once I'm done.”

Conrad took his time to smile gently as Yuuri busily moved on to making the filling for the onigiri. This boy was in his element, not a king who was destined to rule and kingdom and command legions of soldiers but simply a strapping young lad who enjoyed kitchen work and took food preparations seriously despite knowing only one kind of dish.

Everything he did was quintessentially Yuuri, Conrad knew but made worth to note. Be it baseball or making onigiri, the boy was confident and happy when he was doing something, or rather, when he was enjoying himself doing something he really knew how to do.

It made the man wonder a bit, if, deep down, Yuuri was really happy with the Demon Kingdom in his hands. They've been through a ton of talks and every time, Conrad saw the boy grow and mature before his eyes. He gave him credit at that, but for little things like this...

“Ah!”

Conrad snapped out of his thoughts as Yuuri took hold of his hands. “You pressed to hard!” he said and gently guided hands larger than his, to create that characteristic triangle shape. The brunette slightly colored first in surprise before chuckling. “Thank you.”

“It's nothing,” Yuuri said cheerfully, returning to his task.

Conrad looked at his current rice ball pensively and turned to the boy beside him. “Do you like it here, Yuuri?” he asked quietly.

He was sure, if this moment had been a few years back, when the Maou had first come to this world, Yuuri would give him a startled look and stammer out a 'yes' to please them as best he could.

Instead, Yuuri smiled and, not looking up from his tuna-mayo mixture said, “It really won't matter whether I'm on Earth or over here. As long as I'll get to share moments like this and eat good food with you guys, I'm at home no matter where I am.”

Before Conrad had a chance to reply, or even be impressed, Wolfram burst into the kitchen, looking livid.

“YUURI! Make that thing for me again! Greta said it was delicious!”

Yuuri laughed heartily. “Now, that's enough sugar for both of you!”

“I DEMAND LEGO THIS INSTANT!”

“It's called jello...”

Conrad shrugged, smiled to himself and returned to rolling rice balls.
