Birthdays
They mattered before he was in his late thirties, when he had not yet known Little Big Brother Conrad was half-human and when Big Brother Gwendal still knitted him soft toys and read him bedtime stories.
They mattered when mother wasn't so busy with being Maou to not have time to spend with her sons, whether that meant playing dress up or hide and seek, catch with misshapen dolls or simply rolling on the grass by the cleaner parts of the courtyard.
They mattered before Conrad was sent to Ruttenberg, before Gwendal grew wrinkles on his face, before mother was helpless against her brother's shadow and influence, before Shinou's will seemed so illogical yet absolute and before Julia passed away.
...before he felt the years blending into each other and time dragging yet passing him by in quick flashes.
Wolfram grew with resentment toward his birthday, seeing it as a reminder of a distant past he can never return to no matter how much he was willing to hope, a string of days like a bright ribbon, growing darker and less silky toward the end.
The day simply told him he was a year older. One tiny year compared to the rest of his existence.
“Wolf! Wolfram, wake up! Happy birthday!”
His birthdays hadn't mattered before Yuuri came. The newest Maou, who celebrated them and coerced the entire castle to celebrate along with him zealously and tirelessly, year after year without so much as a second thought.
Wolfram couldn't help but think it was ridiculously pointless and stupid, but the feel of a package being thrust into his hands and the sight of more littering his bed was more than enough to make him reconsider.
That made him smile again.
