I'm not going to pretend that I understand this holiday - it fits right alongside St. Patrick's Day, in the category of, "this is not in fact a holiday so much as a glorified excuse to get really, really drunk and to give kids an extra day off school." As I do not drink, and am shockingly no longer in gradeschool, this thing therefore has little appeal. Nevertheless, for eveyone else stuck on the roman calendar, Happy New Year's Day.
woo.
But seriously, where did 2009 go, exactly? I remember Jan-May pretty well, and I recall the summer flashing by disturbingly quickly, but fall? What happened to fall? What's this about me graduating in four months? What?
I don't think I've ever done one of those, 'look back in the year and look what you've done' things, but I probably should start. I apparently don't remember half the damn year, afterall. Future Self: Eat more antioxidents. Dimensia is in the immediate future.
- Wrote a paper on french dissidents and their failure of a colony. Submitted it to a scholarship contest. Won a thousand dollars, which has mysteriously disappeared from my account.
-Got published with the same paper
-Got accepted into RIRS. Wrote a REALLY shoddy paper on planter landscapes. Nearly fainted during my presentation (no joke.).
-Went to Alaska.
-Dropped out of Honors.
-Got back into Honors.
-Fought with my Honors adivisor. Agreed to do it his way, but am doing it my way anyway (and he hasn't seemed to have caught on yet....)
-... you know, I'm positive I'm forgettins something.
I'm oddly discontent with that list, mostly for one reason - I cannot recall a single piece of fiction that I actually saved to a hard drive. Flipping through my notebook, I see more scratched out ideas than formulated plot plans. The only thing I enjoyed writing this year was a three page story about a wombat who goes searching for the moon. (It's for my nephew. Don't give me that look.)
I've never done a list of new years resolutions, but as this year marks the official start of Adult Life (well, MAY marks that, at least) I figure I might as well start. And, oh baguettes, how maudlin and dramatic did THAT sound. It's totally time for sleep.
This list consists of two things:
1 - Write a minimum 300 a weekday per week. Since my spring semester is going to be insane, instead of trying to find the time to write 300 a day, I'm going to hold myself to a 1500 word minimum per week. 1500 words of fiction, every Saturday. God, I am insane.
2 - Live through the spring semester.
Also, things that I REALLY REALLY REALLY HAVE TO DO:
- FINISH MY KU APP. It's due on January fifth. I, uh, have a lot to wrap up...
More on what I did this week.... tomorrow. It was actually a rather exciting time.
