I always hesitate to say that the Republican spin machine is off prior to the actual election, because it's always irresponsible to be content on these matters -- never mind the tendency of Democrats to shoot themselves in the foot when given the chance.
However, I have no idea why the White House dived right back into the trick bag and pulled out the Federal Marriage Amendment idea again. It violates all sane political theorizing -- you pull out your new red meat to throw to the base, not something they've heard before. And if you read the fundies across the spectrum, they ain't buyin' it, either.
Somehow I think they'd have gotten more traction with the full-on demonization of illegal immigrants, which had a good head of steam until the corporate wing had to fight back, realizing their money's made on the back of cheap labor. Either way, not for me to complain, any way they flail is fine with me.
