whoa -- summer vacation indeed. a hiatus. but now i'm back, and i can really shake 'em down.

so back into the swing of things. work working. last weekend we went down to maryland to celebrate my dad's birthday. i'm really interested in the etymology of the word "mall" and how it shifted from a wide open space (like the national mall) to an enclosed shopping space (ie. montgomery mall). maybe it always had the market connotation and the Mall actually perversed it into a public park sort of thing. more fodder for the river.
one week vacation coming up next week, but that means that this week will be tough, work-wise. i'm going to try and stay at work late tonight, but 9 o'clock rolls around and i just get tired. at night.
air conditioning is the new opulence. buildings that have something to prove really keep it on low. you walk down fifth avenue and i think the more gaudy the store, the higher its blasting out the doors and onto the sidewalk. or maybe its just good business. last NIGHT was the hottest night ever -- yesterday at lunch it wasn't so bad -- not a whole lot hotter than durham. but when i left work last night, it felt like it should have at noon. how is that possible.
