Even though it's still pretty early in the semester I just got through an interesting flurry of activity. See, I've joined the school paper this semester (following in the steps of my favorite Canadian? :o ) and have been having a pretty fun time getting used to things. Getting to hold story meetings, contacting people on my beats for news tips and having to learn APA format from scratch (oh wait, I didn't like that part so much...) has been pretty cool. Our teacher/paper adviser Stephanie is also really nice and helpful, plus she tells me my stuff doesn't suck, which is always a plus. I even got to conduct my first interview - which has always been something I've been kinda nervous of doing for a long time. It went really well though, it also turned out to be the professor's first time being interviewed by a student so we were actually a pretty good match. :)
Anyway today was the story deadline for the first issue and my revised stories were okayed without a hitch, thereby ending the last minute time-crunch (well, except for the designers, now they have to put all the words in). Not missing a beat we've already assigned stories for the next issue and I might get to do my first collaboration, though I'm not sure how it'll go.
Oh, and an interesting side note: Even though I came in as a journalism noob I ended up getting the position of News Editor because of my experience working at Destructoid. I guess even gaming blogs count for something in terms of experience. ;)
Speaking of Destructoid, the site's two year anniversary is coming up this March, and to celebrate the staff is going down to Cancun for a weekend (it'll actually take place on the first weekend of April due to scheduling conflicts)! Plus, our awesome boss-man is going to be covering the hotel/food/activity costs and half the plane ticket. WOOT indeed. Needless to say I got my act in gear and turned in the paperwork for my passport ASAP. Should be an awesome time.
