District Thirteen [Wednesday, Fandom Time]

It didn't matter if Katniss was the only one who really knew the happy couple - everyone in her entourage had been invited to the wedding. And honestly, Katniss had never seen Finnick so happy, or Annie so lucid ( Read more... )

There's places to sit and food! Like, good food! Including a cake! Feel free to notice the artistry behind the cake's decorative frosting flowers, too. Katniss certainly has.

Katniss obviously wasn't allowed to dance today. It was a miracle she'd even been allowed to leave the infirmary. But she did smile faintly as she watched people dance, playing a bit with the flower Annie had plucked from her hair and stuck in Katniss'.

With two glasses of something sparkling in his hands, Wesley came to take a seat beside Katniss. As he passed her one of the glasses, he followed her gaze to the dance floor and smiled. "Beautiful, isn't it?"

"It's just sort of amazing," she said softly, taking the glass. "I mean, now that I know about Finnick, especially. I hope they have time to be happy."

She didn't mean to be so fatalistic. She just was like that.

He understood, at any rate. It would be hard to go through everything she had and not come out of it jaded.

That didn't mean he wouldn't try to find a subject with less room for angst.

"What are weddings like in Twelve?" he inquired.

"Simple," she admitted. "The woman borrows a dress - usually there's just one that's sort of passed around. They apply at the justice building for a marriage license and a home. And then they toast bread together over their new hearth." She shrugged, adding, "I kind of like the simplicity, honestly. Why would you need anything fancy just to prove you love someone?"

"That sounds lovely," Wesley said honestly, his eyes sparkling with interest in a way that was normally reserved for when he'd discovered something particularly fascinating about a new demon species. "I've never been to a wedding before," he admitted. "Watchers generally don't -- that is to say, those back home are generally more concerned with work than with their private lives."

A trait he had shared up until a few months ago.

"The extravagant ones... I suppose they must be very impersonal," he mused. "To have it small and simple, that feels more... honest, I suppose."

"Watchers surely get married and have personal lives, though, right?" Katniss said, raising a brow. "Or else your upbringing must have been more interesting than I thought."

"Oh, well, yes," he admitted with a chuckle. "But... privately, without the fanfare. It's often just a marriage license and a small, secular ceremony, if even that."

And anyway, he hadn't known anyone of the appropriate age to be getting married anyway; the only people he knew were his own classmates, who were too young, and his father's friends, who were too old.

"There's a good chance I'd be getting married soon, if things had been different," Katniss said thoughtfully. "It wouldn't have been like this, though. Lots more cameras, fanfare, all that."

Wesley felt a sharp pang of loathing directed at the Capitol.

"As if it weren't enough," he murmured. "The Games, the Tour, the Games again, the hijacking. To force you into a role for the rest of your life just to save face..."

It was something he knew a teensy bit about.

"It's despicable," he said softly. "The way they made you pretend."

"I'd have been a lot less happy than Annie, though," she added, reaching out to lightly touch his arm. "And at least there's a good chance their children won't be tributes. If this had happened before the rebellion, they'd be guaranteed. Children of victors make excellent television."

And oh, hey, wasn't that the most disgusting thing he'd ever heard?

"We'll make sure that doesn't happen to them," he promised softly.

The fact that he couldn't honestly guarantee any such thing -- well, it occured to him. But he said it anyway. He was getting better and better at the idealistic lie thing.

"What else do you suppose will change, after the rebellion?" he wondered, reaching to try to take her hand. That seemed like a good subject, opening up the possibility for wistful optimism. "Apart from ending the Games."

"I'm not sure," she said honestly. "The districts will be more united, I hope. And maybe they'll finally leave me alone. That would be welcome." She heaved a sigh, twining her fingers through his. "I didn't ever want to be the Mockingjay. And I'm tired of losing people because of this vision of theirs." She shook her head. "They killed Cinna, you know. In front of me, right before I went into the arena, just to unnerve me."

That got a stare out of him, and Wesley's eyes went very wide. "They -- dear lord," he breathed. "Oh, Katniss, I'm so sorry." He had only ever heard good things about Cinna, and how supportive and helpful he'd been.

"They're despicable," he said again, softly. "And they'll suffer for it."

"They will," she said. "I'm going to kill Snow."

It was a little scary how resolutely she said that.
