While it may be a point of pride, it is by no means a requirement.
A cleric of Lathander could use a spiked chain if they were proficient (or not and take a non-proficiency penalty). He would still be in good standing with his deity. What weapon a cleric uses is usually not an issue, as to how they carry out the will of their god (dess).
