There is no such thing? "Fannish", to me, is like kinky, a reading practice and a mode of engagement with material-semiotic worlds and participation in a potentially-but-not-inherently radical social project, and for me personally there's genuinely not much distinction between feeling "fannish" about something and feeling "passionate" about it. It's all just a kind of crush. But, here are a few things that put one kind or another of good fire in my belly that might not fall under the 'traditional' purview of media fandom: kink, knitting, anthropology and pop culture studies, pit bull rescue and anti-BSL activism, other kinds of political and especially feminist and sex positive activism for particular example the Slutwalk movement, the NDP, music especially live and especially plugged in to the Canadian folk music festival circuit and associated cultures, geek/internet culture, yoga (in no particular order).
Day 6
In your own space, rec at least 3 fanworks you thought you wouldn't like (because they weren't your fandom or they pushed against your boundaries or you thought you just wouldn't be interested) and that you ended up loving.
This is tricky because I don't have a lot of hard boundaries when it comes to reading/media consumption, though there are definitely things I need to be in a receptive mood for, but I don't tend to chance on things that I don't think there's at least some likelihood that I will enjoy or appreciate. I do, however, consume outside "my fandoms" pretty regularly, including for sources I've never seen before, though that seems to have more bearing on whether I'll understand/expect to understand it than whether I'll enjoy/expect to enjoy it. I also am not a diligent bookmarker and maybe don't have such an awesome memory for keeping track of fanworks I've enjoyed/not enjoyed? I do occasionally read in fandoms I don't like (or the fandoms of sources I don't like, because it's not always the fans' fault), and a couple of examples I can remember from that slant include frostfire_17's " Hi, I'm Jack Harkness" (Torchwood/Star Wars, Jack Harkness/Chewbacca, posted for "plushie or furry kink"
kink_bingo 2009), which I was skeptical about less because of Chewbacca's involvement (apparently unlike several of the commenters and perhaps even the author, so bear that in mind when reading notes and comments) than because I've always been rather "meh" on Star Wars and I kind of loathe Torchwood, and various Supernatural fanvids (mostly Wincesty) by deirdre_c (e.g., "Supernatural (In My Pants)") because they are funny and irreverent and show a sharp editorial eye, and . . . can't think of a third thing right now. Will try to edit if inspiration strikes like a brick in the middle of the night. (I can think of plenty of "proworks" that I enjoyed much more than expected, why are fanworks more difficult?) ETA: Oh there was some bandom (mostly Panic! at the Disco, I think?) story I read like maybe three years ago that was a Western AU in which somebody had to marry somebody else to protect their reputation, or something? That impressed me, though I was less not in bandom then than I am now.

Well, if anyone reading this makes mash-ups (like, actual musical mash-ups), I'd love a mash-up of "Boys Wanna Fight" (Garbage) and "Chick Habit" (April March) and maybe scraps of some other snarkily angry feminist/gender violence songs (perhaps "U + Ur Hand" by Pink, etc., or even "Mercy" by Third Degree), around five minutes long, for vidding purposes.
2. ANYTHING AT ALL based on or inspired by this picture of Dames Helen I LOVE YOU Mirren and Judi YOU ARE ALSO AWESOME Dench in some sort of butch/femme film noir universe OF AWESOME. Icons, art, Brown Betty-verse Fringe crossover fic where Dame Helen I LOVE YOU Mirren is Olivia's mentor in love and sleuthing, anything.

The Ritchie-verse Sherlock Holmes OT4-no-wait-5 fic where after Reichenbach Holmes attempts to delight Watson and Mary on holiday by leaping out of a wardrobe and shouting "surprise!" but in the process catches them in bed with Sim. Holmes is all "WTF Watson, I can't believe you a) fell for that and b) are so sentimental as to seek comfort with this charlatan just because we had adventures with her before you thought I died, and anyway I thought all new partners had to be approved by the Council of Girlfriends?" to which Mary responds, "she was approved, unanimously"; Holmes retorts "by a Council of one, that's not fair" and Mary answers, "well the rest of you were dead at the time and besides Noomi fucking Rapace", which Holmes has to concede is an excellent point. Then Irene returns from where she's been hiding out and recuperating in, I don't know, Knob Lick, Missouri or somewhere funny, and catches them all in bed together (it's like it's a farce or something!) and is all "WTF Holmes and Mary, I can't believe you a) fell for that and b) are so UNsentimental as to replace me so quickly; ballsy non-English brunettes are not actually fungible goods you know" but then Sim is like "hi, I'm Noomi Rapace; and by the way we just invented dubstep by running away in slow motion from some really loud guns", which Irene has to concede are two excellent points, and they all have sexy sex forever, the end. Except I think maybe I just wrote that story, right there, there it is (go to sleep!), so instead of that maybe

I feel a drive to be creative right now but no specific projects to work on (okay, that's not true, I have loads of specific projects at various stages of inspiration or completion, but they're mostly huge or not fic or both and right now I crave instant writing gratification). I can ruin anything. Okay, fine, I know that's not in the spirit of this meme (although I do believe in my widely applicable ability to sabotage, wittingly or un-). I am more than usually flexible, physically. I'm a pretty skilled knitter, with naturally even gauge most of the time. I have a pretty good, though largely untrained and under-practiced, singing voice, and ditto a drawing hand. I give good blowjobs. I'm a pretty good cook and baker and an ace (ace as in top, not ace as in Ace or top as in top, though maybe the latter a bit) procrastinator. I'm better than most people I know with a hula hoop, though not nearly as good as the others. I can walk very far rather fast, farther with good shoes and no foolish people in my way, and the less I sleep the funnier I get.
