Hey all! Becky/
ruffwriter again. Since we all had so much fun last time and I know we're all being pummeled by classes and work, the Original Fiction Drabble-thon is coming back for another go! The idea of this is to write something, anything at all, with your own original characters

(took, uh, a little liberty with the prompt. technically, Jack and Henry are detectives and technically, David should also be a detective, but...well, long story short, Jack has a past with a capital p--like so: Past--and he lets David in on that past all the time. Henry is not pleased)

"I've got you covered, just keep running," his dad barks out as he makes the sharpest turn David has ever seen.
David lowers his head and resigns himself to pumping his legs like he does when he's a second away from the end of the track. He's not sure why they're running, not exactly, but he has the faintest idea stirring into life in the back of his mind and he doesn't like what it's saying.
Behind him comes the dull roar of pounding feet interspersed with yells of, "Gone a week," and "I can't believe you brought David into this!" and "Get back here, you two!"
"It was only a week! Davy's old enough! And no way in hell 'm I getting within twenty feet of you until you calm down," Jack shouts over his shoulder.
A brief pause in the yells and then, "Jack, we've been over this already! David deserves better than to be tangled into your affairs! What do you mean only a week!"
A tug on David's sleeve and then a click behind them as Jack shuts the closet door.
"Keep quiet," Jack murmurs, "Henry's in a mood."
David tries to give him a 'Wow, how'd you know' look, remembers that they're in a dark closet, and says just as softly, "Yeah. I figured that out when he started yelling and you started running." He had, actually: Henry never raised his voice, especially in the house and Jack only ran if there was something to run from.
They wait for Henry's footfalls to move past the closet before speaking again. This time, David breaks the silence by asking, "What's dad angry about?"
Jack uuh's for a few seconds while he organizes his thoughts and then asks back, "You remember how I talked about us being detectives, right?" He waits for David's hmm of agreement before continuing, "Well, I was also a- a conman, I guess you could call it, on the side. Sort of. Actually, I was more a conman while being a detective, now that I think about it. --er, don't tell Henry I said that. Basically, he doesn't want me bringing you up like that but I think kids deserve excitement and the chance to break rules. You with me?"
"Up until your past, but...Dad's right, this isn't something you should be teaching me," David admits, adding a comforting, "It's cool, though, and I wouldn't mind learning, just. I don't know. Henry would kill you and I'd rather you be alive."
"Aw, Henry wouldn't really kill me. So...if I could teach you without Henry knowing, you'd learn?" Jack asks, a grin in his words.
David looks at the crack of light peeking under the closet door and says, "Yeah." He can hear Jack's grin widening.
Jack turns the knob and they step out together.
Face-to-face with Henry.
Who tells them in quiet, menacing tones, "I know what you two discussed in there. We'll pretend I don't know. Promise me you'll warn me when you're gone from now on and that David won't be put on any dangerous jobs."
They exchange a glance with each other and nod.
"Promise," Henry repeats.
"We promise," David says at the same time that Jack says, "The kid promises."
Henry eyes them for a brief moment, eyes Jack for a little longer, before shaking his head, moving back to the couch he had been reading on when the two of them first snuck inside, and announcing, "I have a headache. Stay quiet for the rest of the day."
