I am from Higüeral. There aren't any paved sidewalks there, there is hardly a paved road. Therefore, when it rains, most of it falls through vegetation, to the earth below. The think rainsdrops thump on the soil, leaving small craters behind, and something else:
The smell of rain.
I do not know if any of you recognize the smell. It's an earthy smell, the smell of refreshed earth, of organic material.
It is raining in Santo Domingo, and the smell of rain reaches my nostrils again. It brings back memories of Higüeral, of the quietness, of the vegetation.
