The door swung open and a figure flew out of it knocking Lauren and Becca to the ground.
“FLYINGTACKLEGLOMP!” Courtney yelled proudly as she hugged her friends tightly.
“How’d she know it was us?” Becca asked Lauren.
“Hello? Ninja!” Courtney beamed proudly.
“Hi Courtney!” Lauren and Becca said, laughing at her.
“What are you doing here?”
“Well...” Becca began.
“Can we get up first?” Lauren cut in, trying to extract herself from the group hug.
“NO!” Courtney said, glomping her again. Lauren laughed and surrendered, knowing better than to take on the ninja.
“Court, we’re here to take you on an adventure. Interested?” Becca asked.
“Where we going? Where we going? Where we going?” Courtney asked, bouncing up and down.
“It’s a surprise,” Lauren answered. Courtney looked at her cautiously. Just as they thought she was going to turn them down, Courtney got up and strolled back inside her house. Lauren and Becca looked at each other in shock. They waited to see if she was going to return before following her into the house.
“Will I need my lightsabre?” Courtney shouted. “Never mind, I’ll pack it anyway... My Manda? Never mind, I’ll pack her anyway!” Courtney continued talking to herself for a little while before she came back outside. “Let’s go!” Courtney walked out pulling a suitcase behind her. Lauren and Becca smirked at each other. Each took an arm and led Courtney to the ship they’d arrived in.
“Oooooooooooooooooooooooooh. Shiny!” Courtney stopped dead and inspected the craft. It looked a little like a raptor. “Can I drive?”
“NO!” Lauren and Becca answered immediately as Courtney made for the pilots seat.
“No. Becca drives” Lauren clarified. “Trust me, it’s safer.”
“Where we going? Where we going? Where we going?” Courtney asked.
“To the past,” Becca answered as that was all the answer Courtney needed.
“Cool... What’s the ship called?”
Lauren and Becca stared at each other.
“You guys haven’t named it yet? Ooooooh. Can I name it? Pick me! Pick me!” Courtney waved her arm in the air frantically. “I dub thee, the HMS Fangirl.” With a self-satisfied grin she turned to watch Becca pushing buttons. “What ya doing?”
“Plotting where we’re going. This thing does two things; it flies and it travels through time...”
“Ooh, what’s the red button do?” Courtney said as she reached to touch it.
“Blows us up,” Becca said quickly. Courtney retreated her hand and hide far from the button. As Becca started up the engine Lauren crept forward to whisper in her ear.
“Does it really blow us up?”
“I don’t know. Haven’t finished the manual. I know how to make it fly, I know how to make it time travel. I’ve got the manual on my iPad in case we need it.”
“Smooth move.”
“Are we there yet?” Courtney shouted from the back as Lauren sat back in her seat and strapped herself in.
“Almost, just got to warm the engines,” Becca replied.
“Okay... are we there yet?”
Becca sighed and finished her button pressing. Lauren tried to hide a snigger.
“Are we there yet?”Courtney asked again.
Becca pressed one final button. The ship began to shake...
In the past...
“Are we there yet?”
“We’re there,” Becca confirmed. She turned the engine off and unstrapped herself from the seat.
“Cool!” Courtney unstrapped herself too and ran to the front of the ship to peer out the window. “So, we’re here... Where’s here?”
“The past,” Lauren answered as she joined her friends at the window.
“Pre-historic past to be a little more exact,” Becca added. Outside they heard a roar. Courtney’s face lit up like a child on Christmas morning.
“Dinosaurs!”
“Yup,” Becca confirmed.
Courtney bolted for the hatch, pulling her suitcase behind her. “Last one there gets headslapped by Lisa!” she shouted behind her.
Lauren and Becca watched her disappear with amusement.
A short trek later...
“Dragon!”
“That’s a pterodactyl, Court.” Lauren corrected.
“Potato, tomato.” Courtney walked along whistling what sounded like Chimera as they walked along a trail through a stretch of forest of luscious green trees. Off in the distance they could see an Apatosaurus was eating leaves out of one of the trees. Next to it its baby out the leaves from a bush that was easier for it to reach.
“That is so cute. I should have brought my camera!” Becca crept closer and closer to the family. The baby turned to look at them as they all got nearer to it.
“Hi there little guy,” Becca cooed at it.
“Silly Becca,” Courtney teased. “He doesn’t speak English.”
Lauren tried hard not to laugh at either of them.
“Let me try. I do speak dinosaur, you know?” Courtney cleared her throat. “RAWR!” she yelled at the baby. “Rawr-awr-awr-aaaaaaawr.” It turned its head in her direction. She turned to Becca with a smug grin on her face. “Told you. Look, we’re becoming good friends.” She held out a hand to pat it as she continued to entice it closer. “Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawr” It froze; as did its mother.
“Rawr?” Courtney looked puzzled. Suddenly both Apatosaurus bolted and disappeared amongst the foliage ahead.
“Nice work Court. You scared them away,” Becca complained.
“Erm, guys?” Lauren suddenly backed into them. “I don’t think it was Courtney.” Lauren was pale and shaking. Courtney and Becca turned to see what had scared her so much and froze when they saw a Velociraptor moving towards them.
“Run!” Lauren shouted. All three turned and ran towards where the Apatosaurus had fled, none daring to look back to find out whether or not they were being pursued. Ahead Becca spotted a tree with some vines hanging out of it that they could climb up to hide from the Velociraptor.
“Quick. Up there!” She pointed to the tree and they all sprinted for it.
Some hours and a tree climb later...
“Did you really need to bring your suitcase up here?” Lauren asked.
The three of them were perched amongst the tree branches whilst the Velociraptor walked around the base, occasionally snapping its jaw towards them.
“I wasn’t going to let my Manda get eaten!” Courtney said, outraged at the possibility.
Courtney leant over her perch slightly so she could see the Velociraptor. “Rawr! RAWR RAWR RAWR!” She yelled at it. “Don’t worry guys, I’m telling it to leave,” she explained to her friends. A split second later it snapped its jaws again as it attempted to jump up at them.
“How we going to get out of this mess?” Becca asked.
“I’ve got it,” Courtney announced. “We throw it your arm and whilst it’s munching away on that we sneak down and run.”
“I’m kind of attached to my arm and I’m going to keep it that way.” Becca tucked her arms together and moved them out of Courtney’s reach. Courtney turned her attention to Lauren.
“Oh no you don’t. Dino down there is not making a snack out of any of me!”
“Dino? Come on. If you’re gonna name him be more original than that,” Courtney challenged.
“How about Chip?” Becca suggested. Lauren and Courtney looked at each other and burst into laughter. “Okay, maybe not...”
“I got it...” Courtney said. “Chomper.” They all looked down at the dinosaur still snapping at them.
“Seems appropriate,” Becca agreed.
Growl!
“God Lauren. Was that your stomach?” Becca and Courtney laughed at the sounds coming from Lauren.
“I’m hungry. I can’t help it,” she blushed as her stomach rumbled again.
“Oh! I came prepared for this,” Courtney announced as she sprang into action. She balanced the suitcase on her and Lauren’s legs, opening it up and rummaging in it. “Leave it to Chomper? Ha! You’ll be glad I made you carry it up here.” She pulled out her lightsabre and handed it to Becca to hold. Next came a fake moustache kit. Duct tape. Chakram. Dragon colouring book. She dug down to the bottom and pulled a wrapped bundle out. She started unwrapping it and then held it open to Lauren.
“Sandwich?” Lauren and Becca looked at her blankly, their arms still full of the things she’d taken out the suitcase. “What? I came prepared for all problems.”
She picked a sandwich up and went to offer it to Lauren but dropped it out the tree. Chomper pounced on it and devoured it in one mouth full. It looked up at them and started panting. “I think it wants another,” Lauren said. She picked one up and waved it back and forth. They watched as its head moved following every movement. Lauren dropped the sandwich and Chomper pounced on it then waited for another.
“What’s in these Court?” Lauren asked.
“Ham.”
“Damn,” Lauren cursed.
“What?”
“Velociraptors are meat-eaters Court,” Becca explained. “Let’s throw these as far as we can. When he goes after them we make run for it back to the ship.”
“I haven’t got any better ideas,” Lauren said. “Court?”
“I could fight it with my lightsabre?” All she received was two sets of angry eyes. “Okay. Okay. Put my things back in my suitcase and lets go.” Court shoved everything back in the suitcase, closed it and then launched the sandwiches far into the forest. The second Chomper turned his back they climbed down and ran as fast as they could.
When heart rates had returned to normal...
“Okay, Court saved the day with a ham sandwich,” Lauren chuckled as the three of them lay on the ship floor recovering from their dash.
“I excel in badassery,” Courtney gloated.
“That you do, ninja,” Lauren laughed.
“That was fun... can we do it again?” Courtney pulled herself up and moved to look out the window. Becca sighed. Lauren looked at her, biting her lip.
“Not you too!” Becca complained.
“Nice dinosaurs! Nice. Come one. We’ve not seen a Triceratops yet! They are so cute,” Lauren pleaded. “We could fly this time and find a herd.”
“Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please.” Courtney made the cutest, most enticing face she could. Lauren joined in.
“Okay.”
Lauren and Courtney glomped her and then sat in their chairs as Becca got to the pilots seat and started the engines.
