And in other (not snow related) news...
Item the first: 30 years ago today "Planet Earth" was released. Most of you are going, "What's a 'Planet Earth', other than this big rock we're all living on?" right?
Planet Earth was the first single put out by Duran Duran. 30 Years Ago.
For some odd reason people in the world tend to make these lists that we all know about and subscribe to to some degree or another, and one of those lists is "Bands it's cool to admit you like and Bands it's not cool to admit you like no matter how much you do." And somewhere along the line Duran Duran hit the second list. Just ask my brother. He still gives me shit. We're in our 30's now and he still has nasty things to say when he hears my phone go off ("
Red Carpet Massacre" was my ringtone for a while) or when I give his son my phone to dance with and I set it to play "
Wild Boys" - because it's FUNNY to watch a toddler dance to "Wild Boys" - he headbangs to the drum riffs!)
Anywho... 30 years this band has been around. The freaking Beatles didn't make music together as a band for 30 years. From what I can Google The Grateful Dead made it exactly 30 years before disbanding (which means next year I get to rub it in my brother's face, because that's his favorite band.) Anyway, Duran Duran has had line-up changes (mostly consisting of the same people coming and going and coming back and occasionally leaving yet again...) but there hasn't been a time where there's been no Duran Duran. (Just most of us try really hard to ignore the stuff from the late 90's).
They've had 13 studio albums, a bunch of other albums ("Strange Behavior" - a mix set, "Decade" - a greatest hits album, "Thank You" - a tribute album, yadda), two reasonably successful spin off projects and they're putting together a tour 30 years after their first single dropped. Can your favorite band (if, you know, you aren't one of my fellow Duran Duran fans) say that?
So anyway, it may make me terribly uncool, but I raise a glass to Duran Duran and 30 years of music that has become, in a lot of ways, the soundtrack of my life.
Item the second: It's going to get crazy cold tomorrow. Gr. I have to check websites to see if they're even having ceramics tomorrow, but if there is, I'd like to go. And since I'm not getting my car out any time soon (they haven't even cleared LSD, my piddling little street won't get done for ages) I'll have to take the bus. Which is fine, really - the bus on my corner goes right there - but standing outside to wait for it each way... not looking forward to that.
Item the third: Mom called today. Mom's called several times since the SNOMG-pocolypse has made the national news. She has the baby for a couple of days. He's walking now. And he's fascinated with the phone. He kept asking her to put it back up to his ear. Not that he's talking quite yet, but I had her teach him the sign for 'more' and once she put the phone up to his ear he kept signing 'more' when she'd take it back. We eventually had to go to speakerphone for us to have our conversation. :p
Item the fourth: I've been meaning to say this out loud lately, but needing to say it on a comm today reminded me that I never did. AO3 Makes free ebooks of everything! Some of you know that, but I'm running into a lot of people lately who don't. I don't know how it would work with a Kindle or Nook (though I'm told it does), but if you have something iPa/od-ish... you should have a program called "iBooks". Use your device to go to Safari, go to AO3 and find the story you want to keep. Hit "Download" and then "epub" and it'll ask you if you want to download it to iBooks. Tell it yes and you get a really spiffy looking eBook of any fic anywhere on AO3. If it's multi-chaptered, it takes the whole thing and makes a touchable TOC.
I know people have their own opinions of AO3, personally, I love it and even if you don't want to archive there, you can still download the ebooks. There's 4 different e-pub formats. If you're using another device you'll have to figure out which type your thing takes. But YAY! Quick, Easy, Professional Looking ebooks!
ETA: Item the fifth: CBS just tweeted that NCIS just got picked up for a 9th season. Woot!
