Okay, White Collar totally played out the way I thought it would. Bodlon was giving me props on Twitter. Then I got to thinking about how Neal says things and plays with words and I was afraid we were going to learn something else.
So... spoilers for tonight's ep in explaining what I *thought* would happen... but didn't.
We know that Neal's dad was a cop and dead by the time he was two. Mom gave him the whole hero story - hail of bullets and all that - which didn't sound right when Neal said it.
I was afraid we'd find out that Neal had gotten into his dad's gun and shot and killed his dad.
It would explain mom making up a story, which he would have debunked later. It would also explain Neal learning to use a gun well, so he could never make that mistake again, but hating them with the passion he seems to hate them with.
But now that we know Dad was dirty, I'm guessing he was killed in one of his crooked ops.
