Chapter 5 Chapter 6
Brendon comes home when it’s already getting dark outside. He spent the whole day looking through old shops and even some houses and apartments in search for books, magazines and other stuff that would occupy Ryan.
He opens the door and smiles at the scene in front of him. Ryan is lying on a blanket in front of the dying fire.
Brendon stares at the fire and it lights up again. Carefully he drops his bags and crouches down in front of the boy, watching him for a few minutes before shaking him gently.
“Hey wake up, Ry.” He whispers and smiles as Ryan opens his eyes.
“Oh hey” he yawns and sits up. “How was it?”
Brendon shrugs and freezes, sniffing the air.
“What?” Ryan asks and stretches.
“That scent. What- ” he leans in closer and growls. “Vampire. What happened? Are you okay?”
“Uhm yes…”
Brendon narrows his eyes.
“Ryan, tell me.”
“I…uh…” he bites his lip. “I got cold and there was no more firewood so I went outside to get some.”
Brendon stares at him.
“You what?!”
“It was freezing in here! It’s not my fault you forgot I get cold!”
Brendon growls at him again.
“What happened?”
“I met this guy…vampire…Pete?”
The vampire tenses up.
“Pete?!”
Ryan nods and raises an eyebrow.
“Do you know him or something?”
Brendon nods and takes a deep breath.
“Pete Wentz was the only vampire that refused to drink human blood.”
“Oh that explains why he didn’t just attack me.”
“What did he do?”
“He just … talked to me.”
“And what did he say?”
“He told me you’re just using me for food.”
Brendon says nothing and sighs.
“I don’t want you to go out on your own again.”
Ryan stares at him and chuckles sarcastically.
“So what? Am I your friend or just food?”
“Ryan- ”
“No, seriously! Pete said you just let me live because I’m food to you.”
The vampire looks down and sighs.
“I was starving and yes, at first you were food to me but can you really blame me?”
Ryan blinks and nods.
“Of course. So you took me with you so you wouldn’t die?!”
“Back then, yes!”
“You’re unbelievable.” Ryan hisses and grabs his backpack.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m leaving.”
He glares at Brendon and rushes over to the door.
“Hey! No!”
Brendon reaches out and grabs Ryan’s arm to hold him back.
“Are you stupid?!”
“No but I’m just food anyway.”
“Ryan, you’re my friend, okay? The situation changed. Don’t listen to Pete. He knows how to manipulate people. This is what he wants. He wants you out there alone. I doubt he’s still a vegetarian.”
Ryan observes him and looks to the door again.
“Please believe me when I say you’re my friend and I care about you.” Brendon pleads and tightens his grip.
“Stop, you’re hurting me.”
Ryan pulls away and rubs his arm.
“Fine, I’ll stay here.”
“Thank you”
The boy looks up at Brendon and sighs.
“What did you get?” he mumbles and the vampire beams.
“You’ll love me again! I got a shitload of magazines and books.”
Ryan nods and looks through the bags Brendon hands him, his face not changing a bit.
“And?” Brendon asks after a while, sitting down on the mattress cross-legged.
Ryan looks up and smiles slightly.
“Thank you.” He whispers and puts it down, walking over to the vampire. “So you care about me, huh?”
Brendon nods and looks up at him.
“Yes. A lot. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
Ryan watches him for a while before slowly sitting next to Brendon.
“Well you’d be dead without me.” He chuckles and raises an eyebrow at him.
“And you’d be dead without me.”
Ryan just shrugs and looks down, picking at his shoelaces.
“Probably.”
“Most likely.” Brendon sighs and shifts so he’s facing Ryan.
He reaches out to lift the boy’s chin, looking into his eyes for a moment.
“We shouldn’t fight.” He whispers and pushes a strand of hair behind Ryan’s ear. “We have to take care of each other.”
Ryan bites his lip and swallows, watching Brendon. The vampire opens his mouth to say something but closes it again, leaning in slightly. Ryan doesn’t miss the glance towards his lips but before he can close the gap between them Brendon ruffles his hair and gets up.
“I found some chocolate in one of the stores.” He cheers and pulls a large chocolate bar out of one of the bags, beaming like a child.
Ryan blinks at him before smiling shyly.
“Awesome” He mumbles, trying to hide his disappointment.
Ryan doesn’t know what to think. Sometimes it feels like Brendon really cares about him and that maybe they could be more than just friends but sometimes it’s like the vampire doesn’t care at all.
It’s driving him crazy.
“Is everything okay?” Brendon asks and hands him the chocolate.
Ryan nods and starts eating.
