Chapter 1 Chapter 2
They walk till it’s getting dark. Brendon would’ve continued walking but Ryan keeps yawning behind him and he can’t stand it anymore.
He stops and turns, causing Ryan to walk into him.
“Sorry” the boy whispers and flinches away.
“We’ll stay here for the night.” Brendon says and Ryan looks up at him.
“Isn’t that dangerous?”
The vampire shrugs and looks around for something they can make a fire with.
Ten minutes later he collected enough dry plants to make a small bonfire.
“I’ve got a lighter.” Ryan whispers and Brendon watches as he lights it and sits down close to it.
“Making a fire is even more stupid than staying in one spot for more than a few hours.” Brendon says and sits down as well.
The fire is pretty pointless for him but he can’t just let Ryan freeze.
“We don’t have to stop.” Ryan whispers.
“You’re cold and tired.”
The boy nods slightly and watches the fire.
“Why were you there all alone?” the vampire asks after a while.
Ryan shrugs and starts drawing lines into the dirt.
“How old are you anyway?”
“Fourteen”
“Wow, you shouldn’t be on your own.”
“How old are you?” Ryan asks and looks at him.
Brendon chuckles and fiddles with his shoelaces.
“108 … or 18 if you prefer that.”
Ryan stares at him with wide eyes.
“108?!” He asks and Brendon smirks.
“That’s not old. It’s just a bit longer than the average human lifetime … well maybe a few thirty or forty years more. I’m still a vampire teen though.”
“Wow. How old would an adult vampire be?”
“400 years maybe?”
“400?!”
“You see? I’m still pretty young.”
Ryan looks at Brendon and smiles before letting a yawn escape.
“Tired?” Brendon asks with a small smile and Ryan nods.
“Is it safe to sleep out here?”
“Remember our deal?” Brendon whispers and leans closer. “I’ll watch over you.”
Ryan smiles sleepily and lies down. Brendon watches the fire till he hears Ryan’s breathing even out.
His gaze rests on the boy and he smiles. He doesn’t look away till the sun rises.
*
Ryan groans when he wakes up. The sun is shining right into his face so he tries to turn over.
“Good morning, sunshine.” A smooth voice says and he opens his eyes to look up at Brendon.
The boy sighs because he wished all of this to be a bad dream.
He sits up slowly and looks around while Brendon watches him.
“Hey” he mumbles and looks up at the sun. “Why isn’t the sun burning you?”
“Evolution, boy.” The vampire says and rolls his eyes before getting up.
“Are we leaving already?”
“Yes”
“Can’t we stay for a bit longer?”
“If you want other vampires to find us then yes, we can stay.” Brendon threatens and Ryan lowers his head, getting up as well and grabbing his backpack. “What’s in there anyway?”
“Just food” Ryan answers quickly and Brendon smirks.
“Hand it over.”
“No, why?”
“Just do it.”
“No”
Brendon reaches out and just grabs it with a glare at the boy. He opens it and looks through the stuff before pulling a stake and a large knife out.
“Just food, huh?” he chuckles and throws the backpack at Ryan.
“Hey” the boy whines but Brendon just keeps staring at him till Ryan looks away.
“I’ll keep those.”
Ryan bites his lip but remains silent. Brendon smiles and pats Ryan’s head.
“Good boy” he purrs. “Those would’ve been pretty useless anyway.”
Ryan says nothing and after a few minutes of staring Brendon just starts walking.
Ryan follows.
*
After a month of walking the landscape starts to change. It’s getting greener and in the end they even reach a small lake.
Ryan emptied the bottle he took with him a few days ago so he’s about to collapse when Brendon tells him he sees it.
They decide to stay there for a few days.
In the past month Ryan grew more confident around the vampire. He isn’t scared of Brendon killing him anymore but the boy is a bit confused since Brendon didn’t feed off him once since they started travelling.
They sit around a small bonfire. Ryan is eating one of his chocolate bars while Brendon just stares at the fire, his eyes unfocused.
“Brendon?”
“Hm?”
“We are travelling together for a month already and I still just know your name.”
“There’s nothing else to know.” Brendon says quickly. “I don’t know much about you either.”
“I tell you about me if you tell me about you.”
The vampire looks up and sighs.
“Fine”
Ryan smiles and takes a deep breath.
“My name is Ryan Ross, I’m fourteen and everyone I knew died.”
Brendon blinks.
“Oh, what happened?”
Ryan lowers his head and bites his lip before continuing.
“Uhm, well…”
“Come on, tell me.”
The boy starts fiddling with his hands awkwardly.
“Me and my mom lived in a camp where humans hid from vampires. Everyone thought we were safe but one night a group of vampires attacked us anyway. Mom told me to hide in the basement and that’s what I did for three days. When I finally found the courage to get out of there…”
Brendon raises an eyebrow.
“So?”
“Everyone was dead. There were corpses everywhere and so much blood.”
Ryan closes his eyes for a moment, caught in memories. Brendon just watches in fascination.
“How old were you?” he asks.
“Thirteen”
“Wow, that’s still pretty young. Congrats for surviving a whole year on your own though.”
Ryan opens his eyes and smiles sadly.
“Now tell me your story.”
Brendon groans but nods.
“It might be slightly longer than yours.” He chuckles and coughs once. “Alright. I was human once, like you. I worked at a small shop and walked home after my shift. Someone grabbed me in the dark and the next thing I know is waking up like this. It wasn’t so bad. His name was William and he was the leader of a group of vampires. I stayed with them for about 40 years before all of this happened. The members of the clan started to kill each other after there were so few humans left.”
He stops for a moment.
“I left and travelled around a bit. I hid in bigger cities but in the end it was always the same. I tried to live like that for another 30 years till there weren’t enough humans left to form cities anymore.
So I started wandering around aimlessly and that’s how it still is.”
He finishes and Ryan looks at him with big eyes.
“So you killed humans back then?”
Brendon rolls his eyes.
“Every young vampire enjoys killing.”
Ryan nods and draws his knees up to his chest.
“Ryan, I won’t hurt you. Geez.”
“You didn’t drink any blood since we started travelling.” Ryan suddenly says and Brendon tilts his head to the side.
“I’m used to not getting any for so long.”
Ryan raises an eyebrow.
“And I found a rabbit once while you were sleeping.” He smiles.
“But our deal…”
“I didn’t want to freak you out again just yet.”
Ryan nods and smiles to himself.
Brendon smiles as well before he freezes and looks up.
“What is it?” Ryan asks and looks around.
Brendon narrows his eyes and gets up slowly, looking around.
“Brendon, this isn’t funny.” Ryan mumbles and wraps his arms around himself.
“Shut up” the vampire hisses and starts taking careful steps away from the fire, staring at something in the dark.
Ryan looks around with wide eyes but he can’t see anything.
“Brendon” he hisses and the other lets out an inhuman growl before running over to Ryan and throwing him over his shoulder. The boy squeals in surprise and holds on.
“What the- ”
Brendon grabs the backpack and starts running while Ryan tries not to fall off.
“What is going on?” he cries.
“We weren’t alone.”
“What?!”
Brendon says nothing and just keeps running.
He stops after twenty minutes and looks around before he lets Ryan down carefully.
Ryan glares at him and crosses his arms in front of his chest.
“What was that about?”
“Like I said, there was someone else.”
Ryan bites his lip and steps closer to him.
“Vampire or human?”
Brendon sighs and looks away.
“I don’t know. My senses are too weak right now.”
“Oh…” Ryan thinks for a moment. “D-do you need blood?”
“Ryan, it’s fine.”
“You should drink some.”
“No”
“Why not? That’s why you didn’t kill me, right?”
Brendon watches him for a while, his eyes wandering down to his throat. Ryan shivers but doesn’t move.
Eventually Brendon sighs and crosses his arms in front of his chest.
“Fine, I won’t take much. I promise.”
Ryan nods and swallows nervously.
“W-will it hurt? Like last time?”
“A bit, not as bad though.”
He nods again and bites his lip. Brendon licks his lips and moves closer to him, caressing his cheek.
“Just relax, okay?”
Ryan doesn’t react and Brendon leans in slowly, wrapping his arms around him and nuzzling his neck at first before he licks over the skin. The boy whimpers and flinches away but Brendon holds him in place and breaks through the skin with his fangs quickly. Ryan tries to push him away out of instinct but the vampire’s grip just tightens.
He starts to drink slowly and Ryan feels like his whole body is vibrating. Yes, it hurts, but it’s not as bad as the last time.
Brendon doesn’t take much, like he said. He swallows a few times and pulls back again, licking over the wounds and stepping back. His arms are still around Ryan in case he feels dizzy.
“You okay?”
Ryan nods and smiles slightly.
“Yeah, are you feeling better now?”
Brendon beams and nods eagerly.
“We should leave now. I don’t know if they’re following us.”
Ryan looks around and grabs his backpack.
“Carry me?”
Brendon rolls his eyes and holds his arms out.
Chapter 3 A/N: Don't worry. I'll skip a few years in the next one so if you had a problem with Ryan being fourteen it will be solved.
