Ha, Ha, Finally Archived!

Dec 13, 2016 14:22

I have finally-finally-started archiving my fics on AO3! :D

I had 2 up from previous ficathons, but now I've got 7 stories loaded and I'm so proud of myself. After a lot of indecision, I finally decided that I'm going to:
  • take my time and upload 1-3 stories a day*
  • try to upload stories from different fandoms each day**
  • immediately backdate stories I ( Read more... )

I wrote only one fan fiction in my life, because english is not my first language and I keep making mistakes, I had my husband reading it and correcting it and there were always some stupid mistakes so I put that on pause for now... I have so many stories I want to tell but I feel like I can't... ANYWAY... The first place I went to was AO3... I really like the layout better than FF, but I only posted one multi-chapter fic, so I don't know the answer to your question!

I am basically here to say it is so good that you have all these fic to post and I am sure you'll start to figure out how AO3 works and you'll do great over there too! :D

I really like the layout on AO3. All my stuff is currently in my fic journal, but it just makes sense for me to move it to AO3 since that has stayed stable and wonderful for so long (also it's not like anyone is poking my lj for fanfic these days and the next generation of SG-1 fans should have access to my stories).

Y'know you might be able to find a fan who'd help with translation if you still have a burning desire to write. Or a patient and confident beta who can help you tweak the language. Your comments and posts are always very clear, so I'd think it would mostly be a matter of some grammatical tweaks or finding colloquial expressions/images to match the ones that come to you in your native tongue.

Thanks for the support!

I don't think I've ever written fic for something with seasons/episodes, so that's not a question that would have been on my radar! In general though, if you type something in a tag field and it already exists, it will autofill. If you type something into a tag field and it doesn't exist, they will work on the back end to get it entered and codified. In your specific instance I would add the metadata for season/episode in your extra tags, and it couldn't hurt to put it in the summary. But there might be someone who can come along with a more concrete answer

I don't think you can add collections/ficathons that weren't created in the archive, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to try?

And all your header info looks good!

It has a tag that is "Season/Series #" but I'm not sure if that's actually useful (or something that people use). I'm also using my DW again, and there's a much more active SG-1 community there, so I'm going to see what they tell me (hopefully they will), since it mostly affects my FUCKTON of SG-1 fic. (OMG, there is so, so much of it.)

Yeah, I couldn't tell if I could or not, and then I didn't want to make things hard for anyone, *drags feet around*

I find the season/series tags useful, especially for longer-running shows like SG-1, where I might want to read all the fics focusing on Jack and Daniel at a particular point in time (but not episode-related). Not everyone tags their fic that way, but I am always in favor of more searchable metadata.

So is that a useful tag? I'm not familiar enough with AO3 to know quite how to search for fic on it. (In my personal journal I tag for seasons.)

Ah, I've been on AO3 for ages. I like it so much better than any other fanfic archive. It's tidy and easy to navigate, I think.

As far as your questions...
1. I think it's kosher to list the collection if there isn't one already. Although if the fest/challenge is old and there isn't a collection, you may just want to list the fest in the tags vs. making a new collection.
2. No, there aren't any season tags. I've seen that kind of thing listed in Author's Notes previously, but nowhere else.
3. Your headers look good! You could always try adding more tags if you feel like it.

Good luck with the posting!

I actually wound up with the question being directed to the ficathon runner, so I think a collection might be created or they might at least help me figure out what happened to it. ;)

Thanks! I'm excited about getting more fic posted. It's really nice to see hits and kudos left on these old fics I love.
