Fun in sports world

I doubt you guys want to hear me talk about sports, but today I can't help it. Last night I went to one of the most amazing sporting events I've ever seen. Our local minor league baseball team was behind 10-1, but scored four runs in the seventh and five in the eighth to tie it, and won it, 12-10, on a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth. It was the kind of thing you might see once a decade.

But while the outcome itself was pretty much inconceivable, what surprised me even more than that was how much I got into the game. Since I've worked at the paper, I've taken my roll of unbiased reporter of news very seriously. I don't cheer for teams out of principle and I try not to get too involved, even if I'm not actually working at the game.

But last night (when, for the record, I was NOT working, just there to watch the game) I got totally swept up in the action, first in response to the hopelessness of the situation, then out of vain hope, then out of pure disbelief. It was great fun, and I think I needed that. It's real easy to become jaded in the media, especially when you're behinds the scenes like I am most of the time. Every now and then a reminder that the sports industry is supposed to be enjoyable is pretty nice. That game certainly made me remember what drew me to the business, which can't be a bad thing -- especially with all the controversy and scandal going around these days.

Elsewhere in world of KC-related sports, I'm most of the way through Chapter 43 of The Season. 42 and 43 are linked, so I started with 43 first because I thought it would be the easier one to write. Well, it hasn't be easier, but I'm almost there now. A couple more chapters, and I'll have to start thinking about posting again. Whether that's a good or a bad thing, I'll leave to you to decide.
