Title: So Close
Pairing: YamaChii
Type: Oneshot
Summary: Suddenly it seemed like they were worlds apart. He changed.
He stood there, on the same spot at the same time he usually did; his ears welcoming every enchanting note from the black and white keys one after the other. He was playing a classic, the sentiment shifting from his experienced fingertips down to the slippery scale.
A smile tugged on his lips at the sight. He was finally able to play the piece. The same old piece he wanted him to master eight years ago.
Eight freakishly painful years.
He wasn’t the boy he knew before. Wasn’t the same composed, shy gentleman he was back then. Wasn’t the same boy whose words only referred to him nor the boy whose world revolved around him.
Somehow, he grew up. He got more gorgeous, gained friends, and skyrocketed his way to the popular list.
While he remained the same old insecure nerd everyone bullied him for.
Suddenly, it seemed like they were worlds apart.
They could’ve remained friends, right?
They were still friends, yes, but their bond wasn’t the one they had before. He got busy; both of them got busy that they just weren’t able to keep up with one another anymore.
Valid reasons became excuses until finally they reached fixation.
He was at the peak of his life though, the stars bowing down to him. So as a true friend, shouldn’t he be happy for him? He was having the time of his life, worries that haunted him before fading to inexistence.
He should be happy but he wasn’t.
No matter how much he wanted to, he just couldn’t be satisfied. Why? Because he can’t accept the fact that he’s all happy without him. That before, the “him” who used to be his only source of delight is now unheeded over someone else; to whom he called his friends. What happened?
He changed.
And he hated the fact that his feelings didn’t. He was fine with him being the second option for Seven long tormenting years. Fine with him skipping out on Starbucks dates even though he himself risked his life just to spend that simple moment with him. Fine with being forgotten.
“Hey Chii,” He snapped from his train of thought at that ever familiar voice of his, “Anything you want me to play?”
He put on that smile of his, masking the emotions he truly felt. Truth be told, he never really did liked listening to someone play. It bore him to death and it made his eyelids close.
But he was on the keys and he knew, this was the only sole connection they had left.
“So Close.”
His face scrunched, “Pardon?”
Maybe if he confessed nothing would’ve changed. But he didn’t simply because he didn’t want their long-built friendship go to waste if ever it doesn’t work out. “So Close. The song. Will you?”
Some part of him told him he made one of the biggest mistakes he ever did in his life. Yamada Ryosuke was one in a million and he wouldn’t ever find anyone else to replace him.
“Oh. Uhh… Can’t.”
“Why?”
“He doesn’t like it. It’s such an angst-y song. I’m contented with my lovelife, thank you very much.”
“Oh.”
But this part of him, the one that he chose to follow told him he was doing what’s best for them.
“You’re stupid.”
“What?! WHYYYYYYY?”
He put on one last show, doing his very best to stop what was threatening to fall, “I like that song you idiot.”
It was meant to be a secret afterall.
