One of the Gales had refused to spend the dusk in the Shelter Room with everyone--had stalked off to await the coming of the darkness in the Dark Bedroom itself. One of them had his back turned to them all, sitting moodily at the window to watch the sun fade away and slip beneath the horizon, turning red and shrinking down to a sliver.

The other two children were here, in Ace's lap. Allison was shaking with fear and upset, curled up close against his chest and trying not to cry as she clung to his coat; Aiden was simply unnaturally quiet and still, almost statuesque, with an unpleasantly pale complexion and a drawn expression that suggested he probably wouldn't have entirely minded being sick from nerves. The promise seemed almost beyond his comprehension, and his dark brown eyes were almost blank as he looked up at Ace, voice quiet; he didn't know anything but the house. "Where would we go ( ... )

Ace carded his fingers through Aiden's hair, oddly parental and protective of this tiny waif of a child. "You'll come home with me. It's a nice place. We travel around on boats over the ocean. It's all really bright, and the monsters that are there are easy to defeat." He kept running his fingers through Aiden's hair, urging the child to lean against his chest. "It's full of islands, and it's really beautiful. Depending on which island you go to, it might be summer or winter or fall or spring. You'll see all sorts of new and exciting things. There are heroes and pirates and all sorts of fantastic powers. Even people who can turn into animals. Lots of people live on boats." He kept rubbing Allison's back, chest rumbling softly with speech. "I'll get you both out. You and everyone. I'll make sure you're safe. And you can come explore with me, and we'll see everything there is to see ( ... )

Aiden allowed himself to be tugged against Ace's chest, listening to the steady thump of his heartbeat making a counterpoint to the story, keeping time with the rhythm of fingers through his hair. It sounded like a ticking clock, he thought, soothing but ominous. It was understandable, in contrast to the slew of things Ace was talking about that he hardly understood, could barely even imagine. He wasn't sure what to say to that; it sounded more like something out of a story than anything real that he knew of ( ... )

He kept running his fingers through Aiden’s hair, keeping them tugged close and safe, petting them and talking to them as the last sliver of light faded away. He would rather face the executioner’s axe a thousand times than face this. He wanted to tuck them both away, hide them from whatever was coming and keep them shielded and safe from everything and everyone that might hurt them. I love you both. Ace had never been a parent, nor really been around parents to have any point of reference for what he was feeling. He considered Whitebeard his father, he considered Garp his grandfather, Luffy his brother, and he loved his mother. But it all paled next to this need, this all consuming desire to protect these children. Was this what Garp had felt when he’d been handed to him? It didn’t matter. They had needed someone to protect them, to offer shelter and comfort, and he had needed someone to protect. As much pain as it might cause him, what was done was done, and both children were his ( ... )

Slowly, very slowly, or perhaps very quickly, they left the room. Some vanished in a pop of power, some left through the door. Returning the tasks their masters had set them to, returning to the existence they had been given only the briefest reprise from. With each ghost’s exit, his level of insanity dropped, until finally they were all gone.

It’s over.He hit the ground with a thud, lacking the control to ease himself down and flesh once more. His body curled in on itself, shoulders spasming with involuntary sobs. If he had allowed himself, he could have just passed out there, two weeks of riding himself hard, pushing his power to its limits, pushing his body beyond its limit of tolerance. He was exhausted, physically and emotionally wrung out to the point he had nothing left to offer the world ( ... )
