Summary: Machi tries to come to terms with Anna's absense.

Machi sat on one of the many couches, exhausted from the constant hunt that had taken him back and forth over and over through the house since he had stocked the room, intermittently broken by the need to eat and occasionally to sleep, an endless, increasingly despairing search for the one person in the entire house that he could--that he needed--to talk to.
And he had to finally admit...
...that she might be gone.
He hadn't seen her in so long... the last time was in the study, a couple of 'days' ago... he'd had some sort of dream that he didn't remember in detail, but that had been the last time...
He'd looked for her, had looked all day today, had looked for her last night, with everyone out in the open, had hoped for her in the press of people when the house had come back from nowhere, and had found nothing--no trace, no sound, no sign... no Anna.
She was gone.
He didn't know where she could have gone, he didn't know what could have happened, how... maybe the... things had her again, maybe... but he couldn't hope for that, he could hope only that maybe she'd... gotten out somehow, and left him behind, maybe... he didn't know. It was impossible. But--she was--
He fought back the tears, trying not to cry, clenching his hands into fists his fingers catching in the loose fabric around his pants and trapping them against his palms as he pressed his hands into his knees, but they came anyway, running down his cheeks as he bit his lip painfully to try and stop them. He buried his face in his arms, trying to hide it and smearing saltwater across the insides of the lenses--the lump in his throat grew, his chest tightening and making it hard to breathe as he tasted saline. He didn't... it shouldn't have hurt that much. Why was he... why was he crying?
"...s...hit."
