I've avoided posting about this because I was afraid it would jinx things, but it now appears that I am jinxed on a whole different level, and I need to vent.
Brent and I have been trying to buy a house since mid-February, and so far it has been nothing but a gigantic rollercoaster; I hate rollercoasters.
we started out, and right off the bat we found a really great house that we both liked a lot, we looked at it twice and we were ready to put in an offer when we found out that someone else had made an offer for over the asking price, which put it out of our range and blew that deal. over the next several weeks, we found two more places that we liked and similar situations ensued, one was slightly different because a dumbass realtor hadn't taken down a listing on a place that was already in escrow, and so it was not even available when we were lead to believe it was.
about a month ago, we found a nice enough house in need of some cosmetic work, and it had a gas leak, which we were asking the bank (it was a repo) to fix. the list price was $199K, so we offered $175K due to the work it needed, and asked for closing costs; the bank countered and asked for more money, we bumped it to $190K and stood firm. they then came back and wanted $194K, and refused to pay any closing costs or make any repairs. we told them to go fuck themselves.
at this point, I really just wanted to give up, but a few days later I stumbled upon a really nice condo downtown. we weren't looking at condos at all, but this one is pretty big, 812 sqft, and in a very cool building and location. we looked at it and both really liked it so we put in an offer. they were asking $160K, but it was already in escrow and we were a backup offer so we went in a little higher to make our offer stronger, we offered $175K and asked for closing. the other offer fell out of escrow and they accepted ours in less than a day. things were finally looking up, and we started the escrow process.
then, yesterday, I got a call from my realtor informing me that there is a lawsuit pending with the HOA of the building. the HOA is suing one of the owners because he stopped paying his dues, and he is counter-suing and claiming discrimination. long-story-short, the bank won't lend on the building while litigation is pending. the trial date is set for October, so we don't even have the option of waiting it out. to add insult to injury, I already paid for the inspection and appraisal, so I'm out $550. I'm seriously ready to throw in the towel now.
there is another house that has come down into our price range since last week, but I don't know if I even have the strength, physical or emotional, to go see it. maybe I'm just not meant to own a home.
