I found out today that I have to have surgery on my spinal column.
some of you know that I have been experiencing numbness in my hands and loss of feeling in my fingers since about July. I have had a series of tests, and none of them have showed anything wrong, so two weeks ago my doctor ordered an MRI and I got the results today.
I have a bulging disk and a bone spur on one of my vertebrae that is pressing into my spinal cord; that is what is causing the numbness and loss of feeling.
according to my doctor, surgery is the only option. she requested a surgical consult and I'll know more after that.
I'm not exactly sure what to think, she didn't act like the surgery is a big deal, but then it isn't her spinal column. I'm a little freaked out, but at least they found something. I've been reading up on peripheral neuropathy (which is numbness in hands or feet) and in something like 40% of cases it's like "oh, sorry, we can't find anything wrong, guess your hands are just numb now." so I guess it could be worse.
oh, and we got a cat. more on that later.
