When we talk about another person, we create an entirely new individual. We weave this new personality out of impressions, guesses, opinions, wishful thinking, inaccurate memories, some past act, misheard remarks, misunderstood gestures, incomplete thoughts, self-serving interpretations, grudges, envy, even lies, but mostly all the things we don’t know. For who actually knows anyone?
This new person bears little resemblance to the original and yet exists in the world impersonating that one, sometimes wandering through more conversations gathering substance and heft from further embellishment. How many of these ghost people do you know? How many are thought to be you?
