Movies #9

I have exams next week that I really should be studying for, but I just can't bring myself to study. So I've been watching movies (the ones from my brother since I've had them for half of the school year) and a few I rented because I had coupons for free rentals from Blockbuster. Also, the place down by me that used to be expensive as fuck is now offering 25 cent/day rentals (old releases but that's what I watch) under new management. Just as I'm heading out of town... Oh well. We'll see what I can do in a couple days. I was thinking of renting a couple seasons of tv series if they have them.

I don't know what I'll do once I get to GR. I know my parents are gonna stop me from renting so I'll just watch stuff online/Netflix as well as sifting through my dad's dvds. That'll be better for my wallet. I know Blockbuster down there is 99 cent old release rentals as well, so maybe I'll get a couple here and there.

I took a break in watching movies so this may not be the best entry since some of these were watched a while ago.

So where did I leave off...let's see...

The Beach: This movie was ridiculous. Ridiculously stupid. I don't think there was much that I liked about this movie. Sure, Leo DiCaprio found this map to an isolated island, but after he got there it was stupid as hell. They made all these rules which no one followed (everyone cheated on everyone and made out with each other and ate food they weren't supposed to) and then they didn't want anyone to find them but they screwed themselves over. The way it was done just didn't work out, but the concept was good. The acting wasn't the best either.

Sling Blade: This movie could've been better if it wouldn't have taken 2 HOURS to get to the point. I mean I spent the whole movie just waiting and waiting while Billy Bob Thornton just walked around hunched over. I like how even though he had been in jail for killing, everyone still accepted him back after her served his sentence, that made me happy that they gave him a chance. Once again, a good concept, just cut it down a half hour.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: I don't have much to say about this movie except that I might try watching it again. I didn't like it due to the drugs (not that I didn't know that's what the movie was about) and pretty much stopped being interested.

Sleuth: This movie was cool because it was just a fight between Michael Caine and Jude Law the whole time. They just kept trying to outwit each other. I would like to see the original since it is on IMDB's top 250. Good movie.

On the Waterfront: This was an excellent movie about men trying to find work at the docks. One witnesses something bad and keeps trying to figure out what to do to fight the boss without getting hurt. Also, I liked the love story as well, wasn't too cheesy or anything. The end was REALLY good too. Another good movie.

American Gangster: Denzel Washington is a classy mo-fo. I tend to like all of his movies (okay there have been a couple I haven't liked, for instance: The Taking of Pelham 123 (2009) and Deja Vu (2006)). He's still probably my favorite actor if not one of my favorites. He did excellent in this movie, smuggling better drugs into the US under their nose (well, some people knew but they just couldn't get a warrant). This movie basically follows the cops trying to get whatever they can to convict him and then the end is kinda predictable (not because it's based on a true story but because it just is). Didn't think Russell Crowe was that great, but whatever, it might've been his lines. Still a good movie the whole way through.

Funny People: This movie sucked in my opinion. It was basically Superbad (with all the one-liners) trying to fit in some sort of seriousness and basically ending up drowning in its own puke. The one-liners weren't even that funny because they were all about penises and butts (which seems to be where all the comedy is going these days, even with the Hangover (but I loved The Hangover)) and they were so randomly placed. Just in the middle of normal conversations. The other main character girl (the one Seth Rogen was after) had a voice that bothered me and had no emotion (I know they were going for that but it was so much so that I wanted her out of the movie). Also, it looked like Seth Rogen lost a LOT of weight (which is good) and Jonah Hill has no neck now due to gaining weight. Also, I have never been a fan of Jason Schwartzman and it's gonna take a lot for me to change my mind. But getting back to the story. It's like "oh I have cancer" "no I don't" "I'm gonna fake it" "I'm depressed", fuck it's so annoying and I might actually feel sorry for Adam Sandler for two seconds if it was believable at all in the beginning. Also the love story was annoying as fuck. I fell asleep towards the end of the movie and woke up and just didn't care. I still don't get why Seth Rogen had to run to the airport and was just awkward. Ugh this movie was all awkward penis jokes and awkward romances. Don't bother with it. It has jokes we've all heard before about Myspace and facebook.

Tombstone: MUSTACHES! That's all I could think while watching this movie. I didn't really like the movie that much, but I might've been bored at the time. I might watch this one again when I have the time because I don't really have much to say about it. Basically it's a cowboy movie and a showdown happens. Yeah...I should re-watch it.

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly: You should watch this movie. If not just for the movie, but the soundtrack (because the whole soundtrack was awesome). The style of this movie was great! The music happened at the right points, text came on to show the good, the bad, and the ugly at the beginning and end, and the dialogue was great. The fights were great, especially the stand-off at the end, in fact, the whole ending was awesome! Seriously, go rent this movie.

Hotel Rwanda: How lucky am I that I got to watch two great movies in a row. This movie went a little differently than I thought, but was great! Basically, Don Cheadle holds down the fort of his hotel in Rwanda and does whatever he can to keep everyone safe during the massacres. It's a powerful film, well-done, good dialogue and settings, and wonderful acting. It just made everything quite real. Definitely another one I recommend to rent.

JCVD: I honestly didn't know what to expect from this movie. Van Damme did a great job at acting, and of course fighting too. He acts as himself in this movie who is fighting a custody battle and just happens to get caught up in a robbery. I won't say anymore because this was a pretty sweet film.

The Wild Bunch: Basically just a bunch of old men trying to get back into the adventure of the west and fucking a bunch of Mexican women. I mean, it's not a bad film; their adventures to get that one last treasure (bags of gold) was entertaining enough, but all the stuff in the middle was distracting (the fucking of women).

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof: I didn't like this movie whatsoever in the beginning. One of the main character's name is Big Daddy which makes him sound like a pimp. But he's just an asshole of an old man. Then there's the drunk former football player husband who is fighting with his wife who just wants daddy's love. And his other children who just want his money when he keels over. Also, his grandchildren deserve to be punched in the face. I was annoyed with them and so was he! They just kept singing songs to him (at least 3-4 in the film) and he shooed them off thank God. You think they would take a hint. As much as the beginning of this movie sucked, the end was good in the fact that mostly everyone came to the realization that they were being stupid.

That's all I got for now. I'm in the middle of Gangs of New York and so far I really like it. So until next time, I'll be studying for exams.
