“…What?”
Normally, a flat “what” from Michael was enough to make KARR or April mumble “never mind” and pretend the subject had never been brought up. Tonight, though was different. KARR spoke for himself and April, speaking orally and signing. “April and I are having a baby.”
Michael looked back and forth from KARR-human shell though he was in-and April, who kept her hands folded in her lap and her eyes averted. “You got her knocked up,” Michael finally stated, pointing from KARR to April.
KARR bristled slightly at Michael’s wording. “The baby is mine, yes,” he answered, still signing the words.
Michael leaned back in his seat, crossing his arms. “What the hell, KARR?”
Well, that wasn’t exactly the reaction April and KARR had in mind. April lifted her eyes slightly; KARR actually spoke. “What?”
“What in God’s name were you-“
“Michael, stop,” KARR cut off, still signing every word. “Not in front of April, please.”
All Michael could do was groan and bury his face in his hands. April ran her fingers through her hair, nervous and clearly upset.
KARR shifted his focus to April, signing the words but not speaking them: ”April, go rest. It good for you and baby.” He brushed a kiss against her forehead, his fingers brushing slightly against her waist. ”Soon me-five minutes.”
April nodded slightly, returning the signs. ”Okay.” The pair stood. ”I love you.”
KARR smiled slightly and nuzzled her cheek. ”Love you more.” He watched her step out of the room and down the hall adjoining the living room, and waited until he heard the door of their small bedroom close before he turned his attentions back to Michael. He continued to sign, though. “Now you can talk to me.”
“KARR, quit signing,” Michael said irritably. “I can hear.”
“I know,” the AI replied, though he didn’t stop signing. “I need the practice.”
