Talks

I got to give a talk on teaching online courses today.  My goal was to make today a practice run for giving this talk at a big conference in Kentucky, but the only people who showed were my friends, so I don't know how a more critical audience would have received it.  Guess I have to use another factor to decide whether it's worth it to haul out to Kentucky.  Is Lexington any fun in the summer?

Now I'm preparing for my next talk this Thursday.  That one is more... computationally intense.  Hard to imagine that normally I used to do all of these talks and still do my service and teaching, then on top of that I had to advise for 15 hours a week.  No wonder I burnt myself out.  I didn't have tenure back then though, so I didn't have as much of a right to say no to things.   I'm proud to say that for at least the last couple of weeks I've squeezed in some (low quality and unpublishable) research every day.  Guess my job really is better now that I have tenure.  Most of it is probably more due to my new boss than anything else.

Got a letter from my job today but I'm afraid to open it since it might be bad news about my sabbatical.  I'll open it Monday morning so at least I can enjoy my weekend.  I'll be nice and angry Monday morning while heading for work.  Beat way to start a week.
