Some people amaze me...

And not in a good way.  I want to thank mskatej  for bringing this to my attention because...just...

Anyway, this post inspired me to finally have something to say about Prop 8 that hasn't already been said (as far as I know):

So what I asked this person was: You don't think there's a big difference between a group whose history has been about violence and ( Read more... )

That is actually not completely accurate. There was a disproportionate amount of African American voters, yes, but to say that Prop 8 passed because of African Americans would be the same as saying Obama was elected because of African Americans, which is also not completely true. While it is true that the African American turnout helped get Obama elected, he still needed the "white" vote because blacks are still a minority ( ... )

I mean, I still agree with you. I guess it's sad that I already knew that the African American community was going to be against it because most black people grew up in the church like I did and it is preached that homosexuality is wrong strictly from an Old Testament standpoint without anyone ever questioning what Jesus said about it (and there is actually such a case in the New Testament that Jesus was presented with a homosexual relationship and never condemned it). But once again, that's the power of misinformation. Coupled with insighting fear in a already homophobic world, which is the same as calling Obama a terrorist strictly because of his name (and the fact that he's just a little COLORED) makes my head hurt. We took two steps forward and a step back on November 4.

Okay, she means well, I even understand the point she's trying to get across but it's stupid and I had to stop reading halfway through. Does she know she's the equivalent of an Uncle Tom here? di she understand that using the KKK as a comparison was going to be seen as inflammatory? I'm an old broad and believe me, I've heard the same argument and let me tell you something that shit doesn't work. *Like* us? What the fuck? If everyone used that as a working point then me and you would still be working in master's kitchen. Damn, that's an argument only a person of privilege would use.

My bad. I forgot that if I'm a good little queer and don't cause any trouble, they'll let us have our rights.

Really! Can you believe someone actually thinks that would *work*? Like one day, if you're very , very good, Santa's gonna hand over a little wrapped box of 'oh, it's okay now?'

That's that Booker T. Washington mentality. I think the GLBT community to should adopt a Malcolm X "by any means necessary" stance...personally.

Or take it to the Supreme Court and sight Brown vs. Board and Loving v Virginia...or something.

I'm shocked that this person would use that as an example. Clearly this person lacks the common sense or knowledge of the history of the oppressed to really have given it thought. I understand what they're trying to say but, shit the fucker could have said it better than that. Ignorant Fuck ( ... )

First of all, telling people that the fact that their protesting will be met with opposition and therefore they shouldn't bother is so very counterproductive. And then to compare them to the KKK was just fucking stupid.

I couldn't agree more. People have a right to protest, she lacks a lot of common sense and was crazy for practically telling people 'just accept it'/'don't resist it.' I feel this she did it on purpose and used the KKK example to try detract from the importance of their protest *shakes head* I just feel sorry for all the people in Cali because people like her are probably part of the reason why Prop 8 got its votes.

I cannot believe that person compared gay rights marches to the KKK! Wow ... what nerve! >:(

First of all, anyone that would used the mother fucking KKK as a "point of logic" needs to, oh I don't know, pick up a history book or actually talk to people that have gone up against this group.

Seriously! I totally agree.

I am curious as to the reply you go to your question.

Oh trust me, she replied (though I haven't read it yet) and if it's as dumb as this first post, I will repost it to my LJ.

I know that some people are all yay go assimilation, but people aren't going to like us any more if we LOOK like them than if we don't. Believe me, queers still get beat if they look straight. People will be filled with the same hate. There's a time for meeting people on common ground, and there's a time to stir shit up.

And people certainly aren't going to like you if you compare them to the fucking Klan. God, false analogy much? I'm sure we teach these things. Even if you didn't get it, common sense should have told you that one of these things is not like the other.

This is pretty much the same as a black person with an education still being called a nigger. Even if I didn't agree with the lifestyle (and I think based on my fic, we all know the stance I take) I would still stand and march with you because our plight is the same, even if it is different. And the thing is that, and I don't know if it's also true in the GLBT community, but me with my education will still be looked down upon not only with those ignorant whites, but also with ignorant blacks because now I'm a "sellout" or "acting white".
