Yesterday as I was stumbling around the internet searching for something in particular and then finding things of interest along the way I found this blog called
Endangered Durham. It is all about the historic places around the town I know and love. I often find myself wondering as I drive around town, especially downtown, what the story is on many of the buildings here. Durham is a very interesting town. While I am reading the blog I have noted several historic figures that share names with many of our schools. I am finding it fascinating.
My
favorite entry that I read today was about what is now Durham School of the Arts. Apparently Brodie Duke (Son of Washington Duke) actually lived on campus approximately where the new building is. My favorite bit of trivia I gleaned from this entry was that Brodie Duke apparently hated George Watts so he named the street in between Duke Street and Watts St. Hated so when you would read the map is would say Duke-Hated-Watts or vice versa. Eventually the street was re-named Gregson. But still I thought that was highly amusing.
