Notes: For blood_opal, whose prompt became the title of the fic. It turned out sappier than I intended it to be. (I’m obviously not biased. *cough*)
The ark is crumbling down before them, its walls dissolving into nothing more than pieces. Its majesty is gone, destroyed; the inhabitants laugh and dine away as Rinali struggles to stand on her fragile legs. She wonders what got them into this cruel twists and turns of fate-but does she even believe in fate? She no longer knows.
“Rinali,” he says, placing a hand on her arm.
“Allen,” she replies.
Without another word, he helps her up and carries her above to more stable ground, only letting go when they come in contact with a solid area of floor. Her gaze does not leave the scene. Her eyes hold anger and sadness at the same time, but that’s all before his hand (the one with human fingers-the one he always uses to tap her on the shoulder and hold her hand) covers her vision and his words fill her ears.
“Forget what you saw, Rinali. We’ll be alive. I promise.”
“Should I stop looking?” she asks, moving her hand as if to touch his (but it remains in place-in the air).
The tone of concern in his voice-she hears it so clearly, even if he is a year younger than she is. She knows that he has grown up more than anybody else does, that he has come to realize his purpose and value his life as well as everyone else’s.
But she also knows that he is afraid at this very moment because he is, too, a human.
“We’re humans before exorcists, Allen,” she tells him now, gently holding his hand that covers her eyes. When he reluctantly retreats his hand to his side, she says, “Can I believe in you?”
(What a silly question, she thinks, but she wants to hear him speak with conviction.)
“Of course you can,” Allen answers, suddenly beaming. “We’ll be just fine.” (Thanks for believing in me who doesn’t know how to believe in himself.)
