[Bleach] Rhythm

I should feel ashamed as the admin of the lj comm--I haven't written these two in ages! But here they are, for Dee's birthday, and I hope my conception of them didn't get too rusty.

Title: Rhythm
Series: Bleach
Rating: K+
Characters: Hitsugaya/Hinamori
Word Count: 291; Flashfic

[Written for dtn’s birthday]

It’s been a while, she tries to say, but tears are flowing instead. He cannot hold her (his arms might break her), he cannot kiss her (after all these years, it is something so strangely forbidden). Instead he sits down and watches her cry with no hand on her shoulder or face. Some may call him cruel and cold-hearted, but this is how it has always been-there hasn’t been much room for him, even now when her Captain is so long gone. He knows better than that, he knows she will take time to heal; and unlike the past when he wasn’t able to protect her, he swears to keep his promise. The shortest, youngest Captain repeats it to himself, the small genius claims it, the boy-a boy makes an oath.

It’s that simple. A boy wishes to protect his girl, who isn’t quite his yet, but has had her heart stolen by somebody else in the deep; a sick fairy tale where no matter how the boy chases the other man down, there would be no way to get the girl’s heart back, because it has been shattered and stepped on and ripped to shreds.

He smiles bitterly. I never believed in fairy tales anyway.

So instead of holding her, kissing her, comforting her with words, he gives her his handkerchief for her to keep. He doesn’t take it back, frowning and saying, “It has your snot all over it,” but he just wants her to have a small piece of his wishes, even if it’s so small she can’t see it, even if it’s so tiny she might end up throwing it all away.

He hands her a part of the reason why he lives that day.
