So this is what they call "sitting upright"

There I was, on Tuesday, minding my own business, enjoying my Mardi Gras, maybe having a tiny bit of a headache but not thinking too much of it -- yanno, usual kind of stuff.

Then at around... ohh... 7:30pm? 8? My plans for the week changedAs I emailed my boss later in the week "This blows. Sadly literally ( Read more... )

Well, the first part is what they call BRATTY:

bananas
rice
applesauce
tea
toast (dry)
yogurt (no fruit)

When those stay down nicely, add:

noodles
broth
skinless chicken
cheerios
ginger ale

NO YOGURT. No dairy at all for 48 hours after the diarrhea stops.

Diarrhea, regardless of cause, strips the lactase from the intestinal villi. Eating anything with lactose will result in continuation of the diarrhea due to lactose intolerance (acquired, rather than natural), which will prevent the lactase from regenerating. You need 48 hours of normal bowel function to restore your normal levels of lactase. (Of course, if you were lactose intolerant before your intestinal infection, you will still be after...)

How are we defining normal bowel function? Just so I don't screw the timeline up.

Whatever your personal usual/normal is. (I suffer from irritable bowel syndrome, myself, so I swing back and forth from one extreme to the other. When I start having trouble going, I know the stomach bug is over.)

So more than just when the diarrhea stops?

And just so I don't spam - scrambled eggs are okay? I saw advice on no fried foods and I assumed that meant due to the oil or butter used, but wasn't sure if it was 100% okay for something like an egg on its own scrambled in a non-stick pan.

(Thanks for the advice by the way)

One would assume that you're back to normal 48 hours after the last episode of diarrhea.

In this case, "fried" means DEEP-fried. A bit of oil is not at issue here. A small amount of butter, even, is all right (but not much - don't butter your toast, it's too much lactose).

Gotcha. Okay, that opens up some more work-friendly food options for me. Thanks!

You can do 'scrambled' eggs in the microwave, too - just put eggs and a little water into a microwave safe bowl, whip them up with a fork and cook for about one minute. Perfect! And no milk or butter or oil required.

Do you have a reference for this? I'm not trying to be a crazy bitch, but I'm not finding any reputable sources online regarding this information...

And I really like to know where my information comes from before I add it to my personal repertoire.

Not offhand; I learned it when I was in medical school, years ago.

"Reputable sources" and "online" are generally exclusive of each other.
