My goodness. The past few days have consisted of me doing absolutely nothing. And you know what? I love it.
However, I am going to change that, starting tonight. Today in The Sun, Jonesboro's terrible newspaper, there was a story by the sports editor, Kevin Turbeville, that talked about how ASU placed 8th in the Bubas Cup. I usually bypass anything about ASU in the paper because all it does is depress me -- number one because it's ASU, and number two because it's usually terribly written. So sad. Man, The Sun sucks. But anyways, back to the main point. I happened to read this story, though, because of the "Bubas Cup," something I had never heard of. It turns out that it's the award given to the all-around best sports program in the Sun Belt Conference (the conference ASU is in). Points are given to a school each time they win a conference championship in one sport or another. You know what I mean. Well, ASU finished 8th this year, which just so happens to be the exact same place they finished last year, I discovered. Turbeville begins the story talking about this, but quickly switches gears to talking about how ASU is "improving." Immediately, Turbeville brings up ASU's victory over UA in women's basketball and ASU's heartbreaking loss to Memphis in football. Two of the people he spoke two said that those two events are likely in the top five events in all of ASU athletic history. I started to laugh immediately. It's nice to see that one of ASU's best moments was a loss in a football game to a school who doesn't even specialize in football. However, I'm not going to rag on ASU or Turbeville for that. It's nice that they came close and they played well. Congratulations to them. "We'll use the momentum that we've gained from those [events] to propel us in he future," Dean Lee, ASU Athletic Director, said. I wanted to die. So what started out as a sad, miserable story has suddenly turned into an ASU-promoting PR stunt. Turbeville then writes, "The entire athletic department can get mileage from the victory over Arkansas particularly the Lady Indian basketball program. The Memphis game shows what is possible with the right type of football schedule, and Lee has done many good things in that area." All I could say was: "What...the...hell?" I hope they do get momentum or whatever from the victory over the Lady'Backs. that's nice. But what the hell is he talking about when he says that ASU has the right type of football schedule? If I'm not mistaken, last year ASU got raped by LSU like 55-3 or something to that effect. They didn't fare that well against Missouri either. Hell, they even blew it big time against their own conference opponents. I'm sorry, Turbeville, but ASU's scheduling is retarded. "Let's go get raped by the defending national champion every year! Yeah!" No, Turb, ASU gets money. That's all there is to it. Don't bother looking deeper. The players just get decimated. They don't get better. And now this year, ASU has a "home game" in Kansas City, MO against Missouri. Yeah, that's great scheduling. It just makes ASU look like the red-headed stepchild of NCAA's Division I-A. ASU will get credit for the attendance at the game, which will consist of ALMOST ENTIRELY Missouri fans. Yeah, this is "good" scheduling. It's only good because it keeps ASU in Division I-A for another year until they can figure out some other string to pull so they can remain as the bottom feeder that they are in most sports. Turbeville is insane. Before ASU starts to worry about beating Missouri, LSU, Oklahoma, Memphis, and the like, they need to concentrate on doing a little bit better than 8th in what has been deemed by many as the WORST conference in division I-A sports.
Look for a letter to the editor in The Sun from me about this soon.
Also, I made a quiz thing. Check it out.
Click here. EDIT -- No letter to the editor will be sent out by me. Job interview there tomorrow. I guess we'll see. But the paper is still rather terrible. I won't take that back.
