Went to the temporarily transplanted Arena Stage last night to see 'A View From The Bridge' and I have to saw it was some of the finest acting in a while. It's really nice to see a show and be really moved by it. I wasn't at all familiar with the script because Miller to me strikes a little tedious. Of course I have no basis for that remark and the were inherent problems with the script for the play but what was fun was watching all the subtle things the actors did.
My favorite role was of Beatrice played with jaw dropping finesse and skill by Naomi Jacobson. I could watch her all day. She moved through her lines and blocking like she was this woman. At one point Eddie and Catherine are fighting and she slips in between them and stars at the ground, arms folded wondering if he would go through her to get to Catherine. It was simple and effective. I didn't totally care for the character of Rodolpho but that was more the writing of the character then what that actor was doing. Again he was very good. Never wowing but again that was script. One character I loved was Marco. As the strong brother to Rodolpho who works to save money for his family back in Italy, you can see exactly how grateful he is to be in America and working. You see the honestly with which he lives his life so that when he spits in Eddie face after he realizes that Eddie has called the INS, and Marco is screaming as he's being dragged away that Eddie is killing his babies, you sit there immobile. I admit, though it's not really a stretch, that I cried.
I can't rave about this enough. What I liked is that I was able to distract myself from knowing that I was watching a show for a little bit. As an 'actor' I am always watching everything that every one else is doing and wondering about that prop there and how they got the light to plug into the floor and noticing when the lights are changing gels, so to be slightly taken out of all that and enjoy ths was awesome.
I am excited about getting down and seeing the other Miller show in Rep, Death of a Salesman.
If anyone wants to get me a husband, the guy who played Marco, Louis Cancelmi, would do very nicely. He's pretty much, visually, the perfect man.
