How Do You Solve a Problem Like Inappropriate Judge Comments?

Jul 07, 2008 16:29

Okay, I'm not gonna get too deep into Maria, right? We've gone to a couple tapings, and it was fun, but my emotional investment in the show is surprisngly minimal.

However, something happened last night that just wasn't right. It stuck in my craw.

I know that 90% of the action on any tv show, especially a reality tv one, is gonna be in the editing booth. One little phrase, taken out of context, and boom, Mother Theresa is Bonnie Parker.

But last night, I think I saw the most egregious example of a burying since HHH killed someone's push.

I'll let previously eliminated Maria contestant Alison Jutzi (she's your friend, right, cinn48?) have her say:

The gossip of the evening was that Elaine criticized Donna for having a diva-like attitude during rehearsals. I have worked with divas. I do not count Donna among them. The comment by Elaine was coupled with a carefully edited segment that made Donna look mean, when she was just being frank. After showing a few of the Marias commenting on how it was hard to lose people every week, they had Donna saying she knew that when people left, it only meant she was closer to winning.

I like the Lloyd Bentsen quote, myself.

Seriously, it was pretty damn shocking to hear one of the judges drag what is essentially dirty backstage laundry out onstage during a live show. Especially a minute or two after the particularly damning quote from her on the clip bit.

Personally, I, as a theatre going person (which may be exaggerating a wee bit) don't really give a shit how hard someone is to deal with backstage. If they don't have a meltdown in the middle of the show and storm offstage, bad behaviour backstage that don't reflect onstage is kind not my problem.

The funny part is that it could be considered some kind of conspiracy to get her kicked off, which I think is just stupid. I don't think a single one of the ten women who made it to the finals would not be considered a viable Maria at the outset. Remember, they have gone through a heinous audition process to get this far. I don't think Sir Andrew & Dave (who was sitting two rows in front of me, and had on his OoC pin) suddenly thought "Oh, crap, the fat girl might win!" Maybe the show's producers found the show to be a bit on the dullish side outside of the actual performances, and decided "we need a villain".

Unfortunately, Donna's not quote a Richard Hatch.

Ah, well. Good show, although the Evita bit worked a lot better on TV than live. You really couldn't get the perspective effect without seeing it from the camera view.

Swiss Chalet dinners are also good. Their ribs are still kinda dry, though.

tv, maria
