How have you been? Are you still taking classes? You should start taking Chinese, and then come to china, and then solve their pollution problems. (I'm thinking stuffing giant rocks into the tops of smokestacks, but you're the engineer. >_>)
I've got one more year of classes to go. As much as I enjoy them, next May cannot come soon enough for me. :)
My second choice for a two-week overseas program this January is Hong Kong, so that might give me a taste of China. My first choice is Melbourne, Australia, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that.
Oh man. Both would be awesome. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. I still haven't been to Hong Kong, but I hear it's a great city. What program is it?
And I hear you about waiting for classes to be over. My last week of classes this semester couldn't be over soon enough. I'm really glad I decided to come home to relax after it was over. You should make sure to do something nice for yourself when you're done with classes and really take the time to relax. Between work and classes, how many hours a week are you putting in?
NYU Stern does a program they call "Doing Business In . . ." where you go for 1 week (for a 1.5 credit class) or 2 weeks (for a 3.0 credit class) to a partner school in another country with a group of classmates to attend lectures, business tours, and the like. The ones I am looking at would be the first two weeks in January. I still have to see if I get in (I'll know that in mid-June) and if I can get the time off of work.
My spring semester ends Monday the 12th and then my summer semester starts Monday the 19th. Long break, eh? I'm going pretty continuously through the summer, then I'll have a few weeks off before the Fall semester starts in September. I try not to count my total hours per week, as it gets really depressing, but I spend anywhere from 45-55 hours at work each week, then another 15-20 at class, doing homework, and commuting to and from the city for school. Needless to say, I haven't been able to start many new hobbies in the last few years. :)
ooo sounds exciting. i'll keep my toes crossed, too, that would be such a great opportunity. do you really want to start getting involved in transnational business? I don't know much about it, but I did have a little exposure to the expat community in Beijing. It seemed like for the most part, upper level positions valued more experience and training in the actual job field and willingness to relocate, and less about actually being able to speak the language.
and you may not get to spend much time on hobbies, but you are leveling up in real life! kevin++
While not focusing on transnationals in particular, I do want to eventually be managing a global brand, so the international experience will be a plus. One of the reasons that I am hoping to go to Australia is that their program includes two days of lectures on international brand management.
