For Christmas this year, Jim and I got the opportunity to actually be together. Usually I go out of town, but since I had to work on Tuesday, I decided to stay in town and celebrate with him.
Jim arrived at my place about 1:30 or so. He gave me my gift,
The Marvel Encyclopedia, and I also opened my gift from home. Mom sent me a couple of shirts and a couple of other knick-knacks that she always gives me. Jim's gift is waiting until this weekend when I can actually afford it.
After all that, he rested for a while while I looked through my book and also got online. We tried to figure out what to do with the rest of the day. We decided to head to the Levee and see the opening night of...
DREAMGIRLS! I absolutely loved the movie! We saw it in a pretty packed house and really enjoyed it. I think that it is a wonderful recreation of the Broadway show. I'd only seen the production once (through local company Jersey Productions earlier this year) and that was not a good show. However, I appreciate Jersey for putting it up because it allowed me to follow the movie easier. I am not saying that you have to know the Broadway show to understand the movie, but it does help.
Overall, it was an emotional movie and I loved every minute of it. I mouthed along to several of the songs. I thought the entire principal cast did an excellent job. It was a pleasure seeing Loretta Devine make a cameo, seeing as how she was in the original Broadway production. The "headlining" cast were excellent. It's great seeing Eddie Murphy actually doing something good for a change. Beyonce surprised me with her talent. And Jamie Foxx did a wonderful job (although there were a few times I couldn't understand him due to mumbling to convey anger). And, of course, I loved Jennifer Hudson! I was a fan of hers on American Idol and I am glad that she got to step into this role. She did a phenomonal job in singing and in acting.
With a delight of a movie under our belt, we went to Pacific Moon for dinner (it was one of the few places open on Christmas). It was a nice dinner, but a little too expensive for my tastes. Then we headed back to my place to relax for a little while. Although I had had a great evening, I think a part of me wished I could have been at home spending the holiday with family. This is the first Christmas I've missed in my 27 years of living, so I feel a little bad about it. I called mom and talked to her and my sister and it helped relieve my mood a little bit, but not a lot.
Still, it was a good Christmas and I am at least partially happy to have spent it with my man. I appreciate and love him so much!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all my LJ friends! Hope you have a blessed one! ;-)
