DEGRASSI MARATHON - Snake and Joey LIVE!

THE DEGRASSI 12-hour Marathon!

WITH PAT MASTROIANNI (Joey Jeremiah) AND STEFAN BROGREN (Snake) LIVE IN PERSON!

From 1979 to 1991, Degrassi in its various forms (The Kids of Degrassi Street, Degrassi Jr. High and Degrassi High) evolved into the most popular show in Canadian history, it won every Canadian television award imaginable, and would go on to influence countless shows that were essentially just watered-down versions of their Canadian forerunner (Beverly Hills 90210, Dawson Creek, Party of Five). The latest incarnation of Degrassi - Degrassi: The Next Generation - sprang up in the last year and is winning over a whole new fanbase, and stars many of the actors (including Pat and Stefan) who graced the original.

Why was Degrassi so popular? And why did it establish a cult following in the US despite limited broadcast here? Essentially a soap opera that followed its characters from elementary school through graduation, Degrassi was the first show to openly address issues such as teen drug use, pregnancy, abortion, alcoholism, eating disorders, terminal illness, suicide, racism, parental divorce, retardation, illiteracy etc - in candid fashion and on a regular basis. While the show certainly seems ham-fisted to adult viewers, there’s no denying Degrassi had balls to spare. The tragedy quotient on this show is probably unmatched in primetime television history. Like when Shane abandons his duties as a teen father to go to the Gourmet Scum concert, only to drop acid for the first time, jump off a bridge in a lysergic haze and end up retarded for the rest of the show. Or when teen alcoholic and broken-home kid Wheels runs down unsuspecting schoolmates while on a drunken joyride, and Caitlin has lesbian dreams about her favorite teacher. And the parents (many of whom are the real parents of cast members) are just as messed up as the kids! Many of these kids spent their entire lives acting on this show, and as a Canadian, I grew up with them. Whether you were an antisocial science geek, a vacuous cheerleader type, or a punk rocker touting universal anarchy, regular social stratification didn’t apply. We ALL watched Degrassi. And we were hooked. Come join us for a 12-hour marathon of the best classic Degrassi episodes, including the final 2-hour graduation special ‘School’s Out’. (Kier-La Janisse)
