He stood in the front lawn and looked up at the house. It was one o’clock and he was on his way home from work. He always stopped by her house on his way home from work to see if her light was on. Tonight her window was dark, but he didn’t just go he waited just thinking. She was leaving for the summer tomorrow going out west with her family. And for the first time that he could remember he was scared. He was scared that she would forget about him, or she would find some other guy. He had never worried about that before, she had been out of town before and it never bothered him. He just had this feeling, a feeling that turned to fear. They had been together since grade school; living on the same street can really bring friends closer together. They were friends when they were young and gradually turned into lovers over time. And in all that time he was never scared like he was at that moment. He looked back up at her dark window and blew her a kiss. He turned and began and walked down the street. He really needed to see her. If he had only just kissed her good bye he knew he would feel better about this whole thing.
It was a worm clear May night. He inhaled the damp salty air into his lungs. He loved this place, looking up at the stars and listening to the lapping of the water in the canal he almost forgot about the fear and problems of his life. After he had been walking a ways he turned off the rode and walked around to the back of his house. He got to the back door and just as he was about to put his key in to the lock he herd a rustle on the side of the house. He turned the corner to take a look. There was nothing, he walked over to the bushes to see if there was something behind them, nothing. Then he herd it again, it was coming from above him. He looked up and saw her. She was hanging on to the tarries trying to climb down. He took a step back and waited until she was about two feet from the ground and pulled her down into her arms. She squealed thinking she had fallen then seeing it was him she whispered “asshole”. He looked down at her and smiled “well nice to see you to”. He put her down and said “fancy meeting you here”. “Well I was going to wait for you in your room but u had the damn window locked” she replied. “Yea I tend to lock my window when I’m not home for this exact reason” he said as he smiled at her. He brought his hand up and brushed the hair out of her face, and gently pulled her closer to him. He tilted his head down and softly took her into his. He felt her melt in his hands. Kissing her was always like this, there were always fireworks. After a moment he pulled back and whispered “come on lets take a walk before we wake up my parents”. He put his arm around her and they started toward the street.
They walked and talked like they always did. He loved they way they could talk for hours and have talked about absolutely nothing. They were friends and they were lovers, and he knew just knew that they were meant for each other. Thought he felt like they were two sets of people, one set lovers and one friends. But now wasn’t the time to analyze, she was leaving in the morning he had all summer to think about the mechanics of there relationship. Tonight he was just going to enjoy being with her. They walked down to the street until they got to the docks. They walked along the docks his arm around her waist until they got to the end. It was about three not the stars were out and there was a tugboat pushing a barge down the waterway. They sat down at the end of the dock with there feet hung over the side. They sat and watched the tug slowly make its way under the bridge that connected them to the mainland, and out of site. He loved that, he loved the fact that he could just sit in silence with her. “Jack?” she said in a low tone. Suddenly all the fear came rushing back as if he knew she was about to say something horrible. “Yeah” he replied. “I’m going to miss you” she said in a teary sounding voice. He held her closer “I know I’m going to miss you to”. “I just don’t know how I’m going to stand being away from you for three months” she buried her face into his shoulder. He put his hand on the back of her head and ran his fingers through her hair “shhhhhhhh it’s all right its going to be all right.” She pulled her head out of his shoulder “but what if its not. What if I go off and you find someone wile I’m gone. What if I find someone?” She had tears coming down both sides of her face. “What if this is it? What if this is the last night I spend in your arms?” He brushed the hair out of her face “it won’t”. She looked up at him pitifully “how do you know?” He reached behind his head and unclasped his necklace “because as long as you’re wearing this I’m going to be with you”. He put the necklace around her neck and kissed her.
It was August now; she had gotten back that afternoon. It was strange that she hadn’t called, but I didn’t mater he was going to go over there and knock on her window later. He got ready, put on that shirt that she liked, sprayed himself with cologne, and gave himself one last look in the mirror. He walked over to the window pulled open the shade and raised the window. Then he stopped. A look of terror came on his face and his heart ripped in two. He fell to the floor; the sight was more than he could bear. For there on the window sill there in a little pile was the golden necklace that he had given her.
