I got kinda stuck…I know where I wanted to go with this, but it became harder than I thought it would to get there. Hopefully it's still enjoyable.

Saturday night was Santana’s night and the Latina already had everything planned out. When she had told Rachel earlier in the week to wear jeans and a shirt that she wouldn’t mind getting dirty she got a concerned look from the diva, but she assured her that the activity would be well worth the mess. Santana wasn’t one for traditional, boring dates. Instead she had arranged for a day of adventure, starting with spelunking at the Ohio Caverns.
She picked Rachel up in the late morning and warned her that it would be a long drive to their destination. “And where would that be?” Rachel asked with curiosity as she pushed a CD into the player in Santana’s car.
Santana grinned. “You’ll have to wait and see. I don’t want to tell you now, you might wimp out.”
Rachel’s eyes grew wide with anticipation. Where could they be headed that would potentially cause her to not want to go? She began to wonder if allowing Santana to choose the destination was such a good decision after all. She had always questioned the other girl’s judgment.
Sensing what Rachel was thinking Santana spoke. “Relax, it’s safe and fun…and I’ll be there if you get nervous.” She shot the smaller brunette a wide grin as she imagined seeing her climbing through the caves. The smile was returned as Rachel’s tense body began to relax a little.
After an hour of listening to Rachel Berry sing every show tune known to man they finally reached their destination. Santana released a sigh of relief as she pulled her car into park and climbed out to walk around and open the door for Rachel. “Surprise!”
Rachel was stunned, unable to move from the car. “Caverns?” she questioned nervously. “This is where you take me on a first date? I could die in there! I could be lost forever!” She shook her head and remained seated. “They’re damp and I could slip or I could catch one of many horrific diseases that could damage my throat and therefore ruin my voice and forever alter my future and render me incapable of becoming a star!”
“You’ll be fine,” Santana said grabbing the other girl by the arm and lifting her to her feet out of the car. “I promise.”
Rachel smiled a little at this, but the smile faltered when she remembered that the girl she was relying on was Santana Lopez, former Lucifer incarnate. She shook her head again signaling that she had no intention of continuing this date. Suddenly she found herself being pulled into strong arms for a full body hug.
“Don’t be nervous. Nothing bad will happen.” The smile returned to Rachel’s lips as she cuddled closer into the Latina’s body. Things couldn’t be that bad if Santana was going to hold her close in such a way, right?
When they walked into the building Santana turned toward her again. “Okay, so I pulled some strings, Rach, and we get to go down and explore a bit off the normal tracks on a private tour. We’ll have our own personal guide, so it’ll still be totally safe.”
“I-I don’t know about that…” Rachel stammered, surprised at the suggestion of going off the normal route.
Santana just rolled her eyes and grabbed Rachel’s arm. “You’ll be fine, remember?” Before they started the tour and headed down into the caverns Santana took Rachel through the gift shop and bought her a little hard hat with a light on it meant for children, but it made her feel safer.
As they continued deeper and deeper into the caverns and Rachel began to marvel at the sites around her. The cave was wet and formations were coming down from the ceiling as well as up from the floor. Rachel couldn’t believe her eyes as she admired the color all around her. Her jaw dropped and she found herself actually speechless for once in her life, much to Santana’s amusement.
She was about to make a snarky comment as they continued deeper into the cave, but the guide informs them that they are deep enough in the caverns that no outside light will reach them. Rachel turned off her light followed by the guide turning off his own to drape them in complete darkness. The realization of how deep underground they are suddenly hit Rachel and the trip suddenly became terrifying again. She locked tightly onto Santana’s arm and buried herself into the girl Santana pulled her closer. When the lights came back on Rachel looked up into smirking eyes.
“What?”
Santana could only laugh. “You’re cute,” she replied simply before pulling Rachel along with to catch up to the tour guide as they maneuvered through the rest caverns, marveling at the formations around them.
After the tour ended Rachel felt a bit relieved. However, it came too soon and she was being pulled in another unexpected direction by her date. “Where are we going now?”
“Another surprise,” Santana grinned. When Rachel looked at her skeptically Santana huffed. “Just follow me. You wanted to be ‘the girl’ and so I get to choose what we do.” They hopped in the car and drove just down the road until they pulled up in front of the Piatt Castles.
Rachel’s eyes lit up as she took in the sight before her. “Castles?” her voice cracked with excitement. The Piatt Castles were small and almost like extravagant houses, but she immediately recognized them for what they were. She squealed a little before throwing her arms around Santana and engulfing her in one of the biggest hugs she had ever given in her life. As they walked toward the castles Santana grinned at her awesome choices for the date, she was pretty damn good at stuff like this. Rachel bounced a little ahead of her and Santana took in the sight of that luscious ass.
Rachel looked over her shoulder and noticed the staring, so she decided to give a little show and added a little extra sway in her step. When the Cheerio bit her lip she could no longer suppress her giggle. She stopped in her tracks and turned to wrap her arms around the taller girl’s neck.
Santana grinned down at the girl as she wrapped her arms around her waist. “You’re cute.”
“You said that already,” Rachel said with a wink. She pressed a quick kiss to her lips before turning and running up to the castles.
They toured through the historic Ohio castles, starting with the Mac-A-Cheek Castle. They examined at the fossils and artifacts that they were shown throughout the castle and even got to role play as the Piatt’s themselves, which Rachel very much enjoyed. Santana found herself marveling at the architecture around her.
The Mac-O-Chee Castle was even more impressive externally. They took pictures on Santana’s phone posing in front of the castle, striking poses in ways that they imagined the original owners would have acted. When they reached the top of the castle and looked out the window Rachel turned toward Santana. “This is so much fun,” she said through the widest grin that had ever taken to her lips.
“I’m glad,” was the reply as Santana leaned forward and began to slowly kiss her date. As Rachel returned the kiss she slipped her arms around the Latina’s waist, pulling her closer. Santana responded by pushing Rachel back against the wall and kissing her harder. Rachel reached her arms up and clawed her fingernails down Santana’s back, causing her to moan into the kiss. “B, that’s so hot…” slipped through her lips before Santana could stop herself. After years of Brittany being the only girl Santana had been with, B was naturally the first name that wanted to come out of her mouth.
This did not go unnoticed by Rachel, who pulled back and looked shocked. “What did you just call me?”
Santana panicked. “Nothing, Rach…”
“Don’t lie to me Santana. I heard you. You just referred to me as Brittany.” The look of shock turned into one of hurt. “Were you thinking of her? Why are you even on a date with me if you want to be with her?”
Santana reached out for the girl before her, “Rachel, no, it’s not like that. I want to be here with you…I’ve just never been with another girl, you know? I don’t even know why her name popped out…”
Dodging the arms coming toward her Rachel hissed out a reply. “Whatever Santana. Just take me home.”
“Rachel, come on…I’m sorry. Look, I’ll make it up to you.” Santana sighed. She’d really dug herself into a hole. “I promise.”
Rachel looked at the ground. “It was a fun day, but I would really appreciate a ride home, please.”
The entire hour ride home was silent. No music, no singing, no talking. One time Santana tried to start a conversation, but Rachel just stared out the window keeping her thoughts to herself. As they pulled into Rachel’s driveway Santana stopped the smaller girl before she climbed out to go inside. “Rachel, listen to me. Really listen. I like you a lot…I really do, I even broke up with Brittany so I could give this a chance. Please, just, let me make it up to you…I think her name just came out of habit. I swear that you’re the one I was thinking about.” Santana gave her a quick kiss on the cheek. “I’m sorry.”
Rachel gave a weak smile in return. “I’m sorry too. I understand, but I can’t ignore the obvious negative arousal that came from that moment. I like you a lot too, Santana, but I’m just not sure if this is going to work out if you still have residual feelings for Brittany. I hope you understand.”
Santana nodded. “I do. But, if I get another chance I’ll make it up to you, I swear.”
Rachel smiled. “I’m sure you will…” she said stepping out of the car. “We’ll just have to see about a potential second date.” With that she turned and walked back up to her house, waving briefly before stepping inside.
Once Santana was home she walked into her house and straight into her bedroom which was prepared in an exceptionally romantic way with candles and rose petals surrounding her bed with dimmed lights and soft music playing. Clearly, she had expected things to go differently with Rachel.
She sighed as she lay down on top of her sheets wondering what the hell had happened. As she went through scenarios in her head she kept coming back to one single thought that lingered behind everything else. She leaned over to grab her phone and opened a new message.
I’m sorry about everything. I miss you. She sent the text and closed her eyes wondering how she had managed to mess things up so bad.
Her phone buzzed. I miss you too. Santana grinned as she read the message. Maybe things weren’t as bad off as she had thought that they were.
