Off Limits?

Hello TATSonians!

Question for you all!

If there's one thing I know about writers and fandoms, it's that there's A LOT of them. Not just Twilight, or Harry Potter, or even Mortal Instruments, but fandoms on tv shows, games, anime. Fanfiction.net alone probably has millions of fics. There's always something new or something discovered. As a writer ( Read more... )

First, *snorgle* :D

Second, there's nothing truly off-limits. The only question is audience. (This actually came up with the husband the other day, which I find kind of amusing.) A lot of fandoms have what could I guess be termed "sub-fandoms": fans who are not the original intended audience. In a way, this is a sub-fandom -- in that the intended audience of Twilight was teen girls who thought stalking was romantic.

There's nothing wrong with writing *quality* fic for any level of a fandom. If a really good writer wades into the Hannah Montana fic realm, it's not a negative for the other writers, especially since the other writers are probably young and still learning. A person learns how to write by reading.

That being said, if one is planning to write an *adult* fic for a fandom with mostly children... well, it's best to label clearly. That's where LJ can really come in handy, since those "sub-fandoms" I mentioned tend to have their own comms, even if they're only in the form of kink!memes. A nice, thriving sub-fandom, though -- usually comprised of adults who don't *like* the source material, exactly, but see interesting potential in it -- can sometimes be created by a good couple of writers who're willing to give it a go.

Side note: one of the filthiest sub-fandoms I ever read was for old-school Power Rangers. Those were the first truly no-holds-barred lemons I read. I still have a deep fondness for both them and Power Rangers.
