Off Limits?

Hello TATSonians!

Question for you all!

If there's one thing I know about writers and fandoms, it's that there's A LOT of them. Not just Twilight, or Harry Potter, or even Mortal Instruments, but fandoms on tv shows, games, anime. Fanfiction.net alone probably has millions of fics. There's always something new or something discovered. As a writer ( Read more... )

Hmm... This one's a doozy. I've dipped into other stuff like that, too (mostly anime) and I never really found good, quality work in the cartoons and animes aimed at younger people. (Avatar: the Last Airbender being a major exception. They have some seriously good fics hiding in there, but I think that's because even a lot of older people enjoyed it, too).

I wouldn't be too quick to judge based on fandom, but some might be amature-ish because they are aimed at a young audience. I wouldn't bash them for being amatures. Hell, I'm older and I'm still getting the hang of writing, too. We all have to start somewhere, and if that's Hannah Montana, so be it. At least they're writing something, and that's how you get better.

On what's forbidden: like writerfreak said, I would be careful about lemons, and excessive violence. When I was young, I was into Teen Titans, and I read a fic that didn't warn what was in it early on. In the actual graphic chapter, they said "lemon" but I didn't know what the hell a "lemon" was (thought they would throw in a random prop lemon, or something). I pretty much lost my innocence with that fic.

So in conclusion, not much should be off limits, just be fair and warn the kiddies first, yes?

I AM TWO-THIRDS OF THE WAY THROUGH AVATAR. WHY DOES SOKKA GET NO RESPECT.

SOMETIMES TRUE BRILLIANCE ISN'T RECOGNIZED UNTIL AFTER DEATH.

lol. I just meant that I'm sure Sokka's true brilliance will eventually get proper recognition, even it it's postmortem. He'll be the next Poe. ;)

Don't worry, he gets respect *eventually* (I <3 Sokka, but the Universe hates the poor guy. XD)

There are many serious issues (sex included) that I've encountered in fics growing up. Harry Potter fanfiction basically introduced me to what I call lit porn. But as a writer even thinking about writing for a younger audience, I wonder what I shouldn't write about. War. Racism. Abuse. Anorexia. Things like that. Where I might be more comfortable writing about serious topics when I know that a lot of my readers are older, or at least more mature. It's one thing to write cute, fun and fluffy little oneshots but if I wanted to dip into a dark multi-chapter...
