Here we are. in a little booth at a greenpoint, brooklyn NYC best western.
the fall tour thus far has been a rugged journey, plentiful in it's bounties and
and lowly in it's deep deep depths.
From our humble beginnings running into our seattle motel because a guy at the gas station around the way had just seen a crackhead on a motorbike shooting at some guy with a sawn-off shotgun. To tattoo debuts and despairing at vomitting soho trust fund babies in denver parking lots. It has been quite the sojourn.
Without any trace of doubt, the lowest point came over the weekend. We had just played a wonderful concert in Chicago at the empty BOttle and were all primed for a long haul across the border and into canada for our first ever concert in toronto (the home of seminal teenage school drama degrassi junior high.)
It was but a block from bottle when the car started feeling suspiciously like it had a flat tyre.
now, usually this would not be too much of a bummer as many hands make lightwork... and we have always been deft on the formula one pit crew stylings... It just so happened that the wonderful un-named company who hired us our van had neglected to put the (obscurist) tyre lever in the boot of the van, thus rendering our attempts at hacking the spare off of the bottom of the car totally futile.. So, at this point it like 3-4am and we call roadside assistance, who also tell us that tool we need to change the tyre is totally specific to this car and no roadside assistant is gonna have it. At this point we are delirious and steam is seeping from our ears, so we are forced to sleep all 9 of us in rather small van, needless to say it was a pongy and humid adventure.
Morning came, and our intentions were to pick up the part somewhere nearby where we were stranded.
A mountain of phonecalls later we discovered that the only place in chicago we could get the 2 foot piece of of steel we needed was in Oak Lawn. This was 17 miles from where the car was parked. So, Haima and isobel cabbed all the way out there, whilst the rest of us stood guard at the vehicle and spent up big at a nearby garage sale.
So.....many hours later the part arrived and we finally got the tyre off of our van after 15 hours! yes 15 hours of waiting.! This meant that we had to cancel toronto and montreal shows (our first ever cancellations-boo hoo),
and our most sincere apologies to those people who came to see us play there, we will endeavour to make it back there sooon. We have made many new friends on theis trip thus far, whilst cementing our bond with Dr Dog (BRILLIANT and MEGA sweet lads)and talking about the increase in incidences of Faux-Bo-Zo (wannabe bohemian/cosmopolitan chain stores) with our dear friend New Buffalo. We met some totally amazing guys from montreal QC called
wolf parade. We crapped on like long lost friends about Moogs and heart (the band) and german reggae and the kids in helsinki and jagermeister and vowed to play concerts together one day soon, hopefully, in Australia and the US. Listen to their new record and go and see them play. They are fantastic.
OK. we gotta go. Gotta get onem last NYC bagel into us before we hit the road to Boston.
more soon...
LOVE massive.
